So i have a 1999 Ranger with the 4.0l, 5 speed manual, and the electric transfer case.

Up until about a month ago, everything worked perfectly. just recently, however, whenever i place it in 4x4, whether it be hi or low range, the transfer case just clicks a few times, and then stops and the 4x4 lights on the instrument cluster flash i think 6 times and repeat that every 2 minutes.

It does this until i turn it off for a bit, and then they stop flashing when i restart it. But the truck will not go in to 4x4.

I have read that it cold be a fuse or relay under the hood. which one?i have also read about a sensor in the tranny and in the rear axle that could be my problem.

Since it snowed here tonight, i kind of need to address this problem quickly.

Thanks in advance for the help TRS family!

you could always unbolt the shift motor and see if its running properly, if its working right then it might be the transfer case itself, my truck wont go back into 2wd after being put into 4wd unless i turn it off then on again so im looking into the same problem as well, ill let you know if i find anything else, its most likely the shift motor though if you still hear the clicking i would imagine

i forgot to say this. after the lights start blinking, nothing happens when i put the switch into 4x4. no clicking, no nothing.

I unhooked the battery yesterday for an hour, then the 4x4 worked fine after i hooked up the battery again. then i tried it today, and it started blinking, and seemed unresponsive. then it suddenly went into 4low, and i have been unable to get it out of 4low...

what do i do?

honestly im now wondering how hard it is to swap in a manual tcase.

well 4wd low isnt something you want to be stuck in, but to get it back into 2wd high remove the shift motor (you dont need to unplug anything) and rotate the shift shaft on the transfer case clockwise until it stops (your going to need pliers) then put the shift motor back on. hope this helps

i checked every fuse i could find in the truck. all of them were good. and thanks for the info on getting it out of 4low
