4x4 system fried?

My 4x4 went out and I just finished replacing the shift motor on my 92. I tried the 4x4 and it engaged fine while i had the key turned. Took it out for a test drive and it wouldn't engage. Checked the module and it is now giving me a solid (something is wrong) red light. What would've caused this?

Go back underneath and check stuff out . May be just bad connection or a broken wire.
