I have a 1998 ranger stepside its a realy realy nice little truck but the tranny is junk 4r44e=JUNK. I have a 4r55e and a 5r55e that I can use to replace the dead 4r44e. I see people that have done the swaps using belhousings from the older tranny. I need help with picking the right 5r55e.
One has an overdrive sensor and on dose not what tranny is closest to the 4r44e. I know I have seen like 3 builds around the forums where people found one tranny that all plugs plug in and it runs mint with no mod, except bellhousing and pump

you need the computer, and trans wire harness as well to control the 2nd gear.

4r and 5r are the same, the only diffrence is the od sensors.

there is a thread on hear about 2 guys that have done it. That is why i joined the forum . I posted on thier thread but no replay so thought this thread might get me some help i want to get this in my truck but want to besure while i can still get my money back from the tranny.

The tranny I have is from a 97 2wd explorer.I have test driven it and paid for it but have not removied it, so the guy said to make sureits right. Once I install it he will only give me 60 days replacement not cash .

Look the trans will work, but if you dont replace the computer, it will shift like 4r55e because they have the same enternals its just the computer engauges overdrive in 1st gear to make 2nd gear, and thats why there are overdrive sensors on the trans.

so..... get the computer and trans and it will work, just be shure the computer is for the same motor, and 5r55e trans.

Im stuck with a stock computter because im running a 2.5L. They did not build a 2.5L mounted to a 5r55e. The 2.5L only ever came with a 4R44E or 4R55E, but im upgrading to the 5R55E. I will need to change over bell housing and pump, I think the 4.0 converter will bolt right up, and is also an upgrade. I will keep record of any changes that need to be made and see if it can be made a sticky lol.

The 4.0 TC. has a diffrent stall rating, on the outside they look the same but the internals are not.
