Not yet. I have the new rear main and front cover gaskets in stock at work, I need to get the front crank seal. Then I'll pull it apart to fix the KDP and lock-tite the housing bolts. Thanks.

i didnt lock tight those bolts...which i wanted to lol, but none are lose yet. just make sure you got the seals with the sleeves, one of the guys on the forum (including me) tried using a non sleeved front seal and wondered why it wouldnt fit

returned for a sleeved one with no problems, i went to allied diesel over in freehold, guys were great help getting parts and troubleshooting some things as i came to buy more parts. you have a build thread going on 4bt?

Yeah, i got the sleeved one.

One of the guys on here works in the parts dept at a Cummins dealer in South Plainfield. He said he'll get me a good deal on parts.
I've already got a bunch of new parts in stock at work, we work on a bunch of 6bts. They are used in some forklifts.

you already have the front crank seal? if not i can have it for you monday, its a kit, seal, dust shield, and install tool. i can get the speedi sleeve too

I got my steering rack back today.
I picked up my Pyrometer yesterday.
I ordered my pillar gauge pod.

I put the truck on the scale today.

Front axle:
2350#

Rear axle:
2050#

I dont know for sure how accurate the scale is, they've been having problems with it lately, but 4400# sounds about right to me. I have to talk to the plant next door and see if I can get it on the full scale. This one is a single axle scale.

numbers seem a bit light to me....is that full weight with everything in place?


my ranger with a 6.5 diesel d60 and 4l80 trans is 3600 pounds on the front with me in it..i am right at 6k total.

my engine is about the same weight, axle is probably 350 more and trans nearly 200 more i have a winch....but batteries(huge batteries) are out back...its heavily rusted, no inner fenders and liberal removal of sheetmetel everywhere with extremely lightenesd core support and no rollcages or anything yet..


if those numbers are accurate you will be 30 mpg with proper gearing easily.

iirc mooktank was getting about 30 with his average.

Thats the before weight. Its still running and driving on the 4.0l SOHC and 4r55e. I dont know how much lighter the SOHC is then the original OHV, but the aluminum heads and plastic intake have to help a little.

I'm going to be heavier then Mooktank, he has a Sport and a 3.3l

I'm going to put the batteries in the back, to help with weight distribution. But the motor and trans is going to be heavy. The 4bt weighs in at 750 and the ZF is heavy for an aluminum cased tranny.

As far as gears, I'm going to leave the 3.55s and approx. 31" tires for now. I have a spare set of axles that I'll regear to 3.08/3.07s. I just have to figure out what carrier to use up front with jeep d35 3.07s.

the d60 killed my 308 dreams.....308 with 33s makes for good cruise speed with a turbo.

i run 410 gears and 37 in military, and they are ok with the non turbo application on the road, but seriously cut into economy.

with 33 in tires and 50-55 mph 20 mpg was easy with nearly 26 on a few trips when this engine was in the young 200 k range, but my injectors are totally trashed now and i get 15-17 with the 37's at 55-65. town is pretty much the same now too ...its well over 300 k working to 400 now so its days are numbered.

see what happens with fresher engine and injectors. i suspect a good 4bt in my same situation would pull 23-25 easily.....likely 17-19 town. but would be slower to get to speed unless cranked up.

i am working with some different transmission mount applications currently. i have a different idea i want to build and try. this setup used for engine and trans with a 4bt may be a good way to go.

i found the 4bt too loud and vibration prone to fit my taste. but it certainly is more economical to operate.

with the manual trans i am confident you will be satisfied with the fruits of this work even as involved as it is....

The 4bt defiantly isnt a refined engine, but that doesnt bother me. I've DD'd a lot of stuff that wasnt "refined" before. I'm doing this for mainly 2 reasons.

1) fuel mileage (I can also run a small % of filtered waste hydraulic oil or tranny fluid in with the diesel fuel to cut the total down even more. I drained the hydro tank on 1 of the big forklifts, 36 gallons!)
2) because I want to see if I can.


3.08 came in the D61, but I dont think the 61 was available high pinion.



I've been researching bypass filters lately, who know anything about these? From what I've read, they basically "super filter" a small percent of the engine oil. Everything says it will extend your oil change intervals by huge amounts, but I really am interested in doing it to keep the oil cleaner.
