4bt swap -- 95 Explorer

for my type of engine, bypass filtering is something that should be done, the 4bt runs much cleaner. any engine will greatly benefit from it if you run hard and have extended idle time etc.

small amount of waste oil?

with some heat 100% tranny/hydro fluid burns fine with decent injectors.

in the warmer months 30 percent mix works real good for me, running through just a 10 mic and no heat at all. i actually use buckets or my old stock tank in combo with the fat bastard van tank.

now that my injectors are so far gone i been running mostly diesel as it smokes noticably at idle and has less power....but i am pretty sure its nearly 300k past 1st scheduled injector service, so a guy cant really bitch about it now can he:D

i have done some huge experimenting with it, and it really cut my operating costs down.

when comparing cost equivocation over the 302, while running the mix its impressive. i still cant believe i have not put a turbo on it. damn thing gets by ok, and its easier on parts when i do get into some situations....it has disappointed me on a few occasions though so i am certain i would not be happy with a stock cummins over a stockish turbo 6.5.

if i was regularly wheeling it i am sure it would have had a turbo long ago...but its my daily most of the time so we are on the same page there.

Looking good :icon_thumby:

Bobby, do you have a build thread on here?

I'm going to start off slow burning alt fuels. I've read about what I can run, never tried it. This is the first diesel I've owned. I've also read that I can burn waste engine oil. I've got a lot of that at work. We service forklifts. Figure 50 gallons a month. Most of the trucks are propane = cleaner oil before filtering.

I dont plan on keeping it stock. I already ordered a 12cm³ housing for the turbo (its got an 18cm³ now). That should spool the turbo faster and give me higher boost. I'll also be turning the pump up a little, not too much, im doing this swap for the fuel economy.

I dont think I'll be disappointed with it. I dont need to make tons of power, Its a commuter vehicle. If I want to play, I can take out the 94 Cobra, '89 Supercoupe, or 94 Explorer.

Thanks.

Yeah, do you have a build thread?

pretty tight. the down pipe was made out of the original pipe, just cut up and welded to the angle i needed. its a little rusty and the turbo got all pitted, only part that sucks about living next to the ocean.

Someone has been pestering me to update this thread (you know who you are!).
Let me start by saying I dont really have a budget, whatever it costs is what it costs. I've been buying parts, so let me get some numbers down on paper (prices include shipping):
1200 --- Engine
75 --- Trans
12 --- Motor mounts (28.50 for the different set, I'm not sure which will work better yet.)
14 --- Trans mount
54 --- turbo rebuild kit
57 --- Vacuum gauge
30 --- Vacuum tank
48 --- Boost gauge
99 --- Pyrometer
37 --- 2 gauge pillar pod
11 --- 3 gauge universal pod (cut it up within hours of receiving it)
135 --- Starter
105 --- Tach adapter (used to retain stock tach)
40 --- Pedals (This is also a manual conversion)
20 --- 3200 RPM spring
25 --- T-stat housing (angled instead of straight)
75 --- Power steering pump
32 --- "A" torsion bars ( 1.09" diameter, truck had "B" bars 1.06" dia.)
53 --- Electric fuel pump (90's GMC low pressure external pump)
230 --- 12cm³ exhaust housing (non-wastgate)

I did get a little work done over the weekend, not as much as I would have like to (family stuff gets in the way):

I grafted the 3 gauge pod in, and eliminated the rear wiper switch (I dont use it anyway). I'm done with the epoxy and glass work, still need to do the finishing work and paint.

You happy Steve?

where the hell did you score an engine so cheap!?

Craigslist. He wanted 1500 firm. I showed him all the play in the turbo, told him it needs to be replaced. He said how about 1200. I said "load it up". Bought a rebuild kit for $54. :D

Man, I had to drive all the way to Toms River on 4th of July weekend.

BUT, it was only about 10-12 miles from my house, and all back roads. :thefinger:

kiss it! lol you going out to carlisle? not with the 4bt of course unless you are making some super progress n not telling

Yeah, I'm going. Not with the Cummins though. I am taking the Ex for its last (and its first) public showing of the SOHC/EEC IV swap. The 4bt swap will start right after Carlisle.

Still needs paint, but you get the point.

I like the way that looks....You got some pics from the back side?? Did you use glass with a mold, of did you mod the original??
