4.0 w/180,000 miles rebuild advice....

first off, Bob piss off. I don't ever want your advise. You have no idea what my technical experience is.

Second, used engines around me run around $500 if they run.

Third, I plan on replacing what is bad and boring IF I have to. I am doing this for a winter project. Hopefully it will be ready for the swap next spring.

I plan on havng the wiring harness all ready to go by then too.

Uncalled for. He's right on all counts here.

And he DOES have SOME idea of your technical experience in engine rebuilding, from this thread if not from others. It's obvious you've never done it before. Which is fine -- we all have to learn somehow -- but keep your own experience in sight. You have very obviously confused teardown and assembly with rebuilding.

And if you can't separate technical from emotional, you're going to end up throwing tools and basically screwing up.

$500 is about right for a full service yard. $150 for a pull-yer-own. Of course prices vary by locale, but not by quite as much as you think. And $500 is still quite a lot less than $1800.

If you do this YOURSELF, you are very likely to be spending nearly as much on it. Because there are knocks, you know there is a problem with the bottom end. If it's PERFECT and you can get away with a crank polish and hone, new cheap rings and bearings, the heads WILL be trashed and you'll still spend around $1000 or so. You know yours isn't perfect.

To toss my own can of gasoline on this particular fire If I were looking at "rebuilding"
(more like "Freshening up") an engine a 180k donor would not be my choice.

Like I said, I can by close of buisness today (5pm EDT) have a
RUNNING 4.0 engine that I will SEE run TODAY on my tailgate for $175.

IF I were rebuilding an engine I'd stick to a '93-94 donor from an auto trans vehicle
(manual trans vehicles tend to wear the thrust main bearing proportional to mileage)

with high mileage and a known problem? I wouldn't bother.
I would only buy the engine you are talking about as scrap.

And as scrap it's worth about $40 and that's top dollar.
(and presumes that I'd strip the upper and lower intake off it
to scrap seperatly as cast aluminum)

If you want an engine PM me.
I'm trying to set up a westbound trip just after thanksgiving

Taking an engine to either the Iindy metro area or the SouthBend
area is easy.

Bob tries to start things way too often.

I myself have never rebuilt an engine, but my brother and father have done it numerous times. I wouldn't be doing this myself obviously.

if i were you i would get a better engine to freshen up that dont make noise or anything. mine has 220,000 on it and it quiet as can be, so i cant imagine what hell that engine went thru cuz mine was not maintained too well
