4.0 rebuild but now motor wont start

i just rebuilt my 4.0 motor out of a 96. i got everything hooked back up and new plugs and wires. but now it wont start. it cranks then stalls and cranks again. any ideas? and starting fluid wont start it and its getting spark. help please???

make sure you got your wires hooked up right. after I did my valve covers, I hooked the driver side wires to the coil out of order and it wouldn't stay running. crank, fire, ping, stall. it also took several cranks to get the fuel pressure back up from rehooking up the fuel lines too. But once I figured out the wire sequence, it fired right up.

your coil pack wiring sequence firewall is up, passenger side is left, driver side is right:

ok i did that and started right up but now it runs rougher than hell. and as soon as you pu it in gear it dies??? any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated. and thanks for help so far.

in addition to the coil pack wiring sequence... make sure that you are assigning the right cylinder numbers to the engine:

3 6
2 5
1 4

If everything there is good, make sure the wires and plugs themselves are good. it kinda sounds like you are maybe not firing on all cylinders. double check that you are geting spark at each plug.

Next thing to check is the fuel. is the fuel pressure regulator hooked up correctly? (check vacuum line to it)
did you change the fuel filter? (if not do so)

check all the vacuum lines to make sure they are connected and there are no leaks. double check the pcv hose, this is a common leak area. also look at the lines connecting all of the egr sensors on the intake.


Is the upper intake itself properly torqued down?



if all of the above is good, could be that you need to let it run a bit and warm up.
