Yeah, the gas idea seemed not that great.

In the comments someone mentions not using WD40 because the stones load up and there's another comment about using water instead. Water is a terrible lubricant though. Google says honing oil, ATF, or kerosene/engine oil mix work well.

hence using a lot of it... like I said, all on expected outcome, I'm normally going for less bad or marginally reasonable...

Less bad is good!

I have honed out a bunch of wheel cylinders and usually just use whatever can of liquid is nearby. Usually WD40 cuz I have a lot of it but I've tried PB blaster, 3-in-1 oil, garage door lube... anything that is soluble in brake cleaner afterwards seemed to be fine.

I watched the vid. I didn't see where he said he was using gas. Maybe I missed it. I can remember a buddy of mine cleaning a carb over a pail of gas. He was smoking while doing it. Freaked me out a bit. But you need stoichometric (speling) fuel/air ratio and an open flame or spark for ignition.

9:45 he mentioned wiping the walls down with gas and I am assuming that's what is in the bottle on the table that gets squirted in later. I swear there was another video in that series where he specifically said "I use gas while honing" or something to that affect but I'm not going to re-watch them all to find it.

One interesting thing I found in another video (from someone else) was the recommendation to wash anything like this in soap & water afterward - cylinder walls, brake rotors, etc. I would never have thought to do that but it makes sense.
