My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Ok. Sorry for the late start. There is a lot going on in the Curious Hound Kennel. I am beginning the planning for the 2026 Fall Colors Campout. Things mentioned here are currently tentative. I will edit this when it firms up, hopefully no later than 2 months from now. That way you know what is going on. Bookmark this thread.

Location; We are moving this event to the New River Gorge area near Fayetteville, WV.
This should be a picturesque and interesting area to visit with some unique things to see and do.

Dates; see the poll above. Last year, some didn't attend because the dates interfered with Overland Expo East in Arrington, VA. The expo, this year is the weekend of October 23-25. So, earlier October weekends should be acceptable for our event. I chose Thursday thru Sunday blocks. But you can come earlier or stay later if you want. Depending on which weekend we choose, I may do closer to a weeklong stay, personally. Currently, My vote is for the 3rd weekend mentioned above. That is due to availability at the campground mentioned below. But I can change my mind easily to accommodate the group.

Camping; I am currently looking at The Outpost Campground. But some of the dates we are considering may already be booked. It is a bit confusing because they say "no reservations more than 120 days in advance" on the website. But when I look at particular tent sites, they say "not available". I will email them and find out the deal. Specifically, their "Lower Outpost" area looks most promising for us. It even includes a field camping area that is less than $30 per night. They offer 10% military discount and a 12% weekly discount if you decide to stay for 6 nights or more. They are pet-friendly. I may look for camping further south, closer to Beckley. That will reduce driving time to some of the "things to do" that are further south, near Princeton. It would still be a short trip to see the bridge.

There seem to be a bunch of other campgrounds in the area, including National Park campgrounds. Most of the NPS campgrounds would probably be primitive with just campsites (picnic table and fire ring) and vault toilets. Let me know if these would be a turn-off for you.

Activity planning will be announced later. A scenic drive like last fall should be easy to plan. There is a coal mine tour available not too far away. I know of another surprise I might be able to arrange. and I'm sure there are plenty of historic sites. I'm just beginning to research it. But, you know I'll dig up some fun stuff. I will also entertain requests.
