Hello. I have been working on my 1999 Ranger for a little while trying to get some codes cleared to pass smog. I recently changed the DPFE and pigtail...the Check Engine light did not come off and the car still showed 3 codes.

However, shortly after driving it (100 miles) the Check Engine Light suddenly went off!? I was surprised thought something worked after driving it a few cycles.

*I went home and plugged in the OBD II reader…..and still have the same 3 codes. So, can the Check Engine light just go out?

*AND...when I turn on the Head lights all 4 indicator lamps light up in Orange across dash. "Gas-Oil-Temp-Voltage".....but only with headlights on.

*Any input is appreciated. I am a DIY…so, not a Pro, or even a semi-pro.

Signed---frustrated.

Turn your key on and see if the check engine comes on. If it does the light is working fine and chances are those codes are no longer active and just memory codes stored in the ECM. You can delete them with your scanner or unhook the negative cable for 15-20 minutes and itll reset itself.

As far as the headlight on thing...it sounds like one of your dash lights is illuminating the others either by being loose or one of the dividers/filters in the cluster is messed up.

/\ like he said, you should clear the codes. It will take at least 3 drive cycles for the PCM to clear them.
Check your grounds before getting too involved. I've seen a poor ground at the core support cause some weird stuff.

Thanks for the advice. I will do that see what happens....the 4 lights seem to be distinct orange light but will look much closer today...
