You are better off with the 1989 to 1992 since they have the newer head design, have 89TM designation

You can always put 89-92 heads on an 86/87 block as well.

And a used 1986-1988 2.9l may already have the newer 89TM heads because of a past issue, they are interchangeable as far as the block goes
