2.8 social group...

Im only getting 9.5-10 mpg out of my truck, and i need to be getting better. I have no clue what jets i have in it now, but i have the jets left over from my stock carb and was just going to throw them in.

The factory carb has the #50 jets in it. The big thing to do to get the most mileage out of this set up is to fine tune the carb, such as setting the float level, fine tunning your timing, etc... No two RBV's with this setup will be the same. One thing that really effects your gas mileage is how you drive such as accelerating, how hard you mash on the skinny pedal, shifting time (maunal trannies), etc....

Its a setup that you have to play with a bit. In town driving just kills mileage for me but driving highway speeds alot, it tends to do better.

My Ranger is completely stock 1983 with the 2.8 and a 5 speed and 350,000 miles. The only thing mine has is 30x9.50-15's and a 3 or so inch lift. When it starts getting crummy mileage like 14-15 mpg it is usually the carb. I usually get 18 +- combined driving and 20-23 highway @ 65 mph.

I dont mash anywhere, and i am running a a4ld that is on its last leg (i basically have to make it shift). I haven done much more to the carb because i am still learning on how to do it. My truck see mostly city, my overdrive does not work.

Thats why your mileage sucks. Your tranny is going out and your losing alot of the power from the engine from the tranny not working properly. Plus city driving isnt good on mileage either, thats basiclly all my truck sees right now.

In the next few weeks i should be moving along with my TK4 swap. Hopefuly that will help with the mileage

Ok, i got a set of 49E and 45E jets out of a stock carb, i have a motorcraft 2100 on my truck now. Will the sets from the 2150 fit in the 2100? And what does the E mean after the jet size number?

What size venuris does your 2100 have?

One thing to remember, they only came on V8's back in the day. I think the closest thing displacement-wise in the instructions with mine was like a 260. And the emission rules were as long as it didn't smoke too bad about anything went.

I had a 2100 on my 2.8 for awhile, it ran great top end but acted like it couldn't keep air moving thru it fast enough at idle to stay running. I had to tap the throttle once in awhile or it would die. I don't remember exactly how big they where, but they were bigger 1.08. All and all it ran better with the factory carb and got the same crappy milage so I went back to it.

Non feedback 1.08 2150's are fairly common on early smog era (late '70's) 302's, if your TK5 swap doesn't help...

Pretty sure its has 1.08, it has a circle with 1.08 in the middle on the side.

I'm hoping the TK4, manual hubs and some more carb fiddling should improve my gas mileage. If not then i give up lol

figured i'd chime in on the gas mileage....

manual hubs
5spd
3.55 gears
30 x 9.5 tires
durasparked
2150 motocraft
1.02 vent
no idea on jet size

i've been getting about 12-16 in the city......10 if i drive like a lunatic
and about 18 highway

but i finally re-timed it with a vac gauge and timing light and it runs like a whole different animal (more low end torque and power through all the gears)....expecting city mileage to be around 16-18 now and highway to be even better
only on 2nd tank with the new timing so no accurate results yet

I have been driving highway speeds these past few days and so far Im doing better on mileage but I see more in town driving then anything. Get paid friday and will fill her up again and see what my mileage is.

just filled up again tonight....

city mileage is about 17 mpgs now (16.89 is what i calculated)

runs like a boss....but tops out about 85-90 :icon_confused: lol
probably the 1st and last time it will ever see those speeds :icon_surprised:

Mine does 55mph before the wind resistance is just to much on a level road, going down hill is another thing, got it up to 75mph before I decided to not try to push my limits. Before I put my tires on I was able to go faster, but its not a speed machine, I didnt build it to do that.

Is the shift modulator working on the tranny. There is a vacuum line from the intake tree to the modulator on the pass side of the tranny if it shifts hard between 1st and 2nd it could be it is not connected or working correct. It is on the tranny next to the cat. Make sure it is getting vacuum to it while the engine is running check the tubing for cracks and it fits tight on the modulator if that don`t help change the modulator. How old is the oil in the tranny. I pull the pan and start the engine for a few seconds, change the filter and then add new oil. Add 4 quarts first then start it for a few minutes then get it close to full then warm it all the way up and top it off dont overfill it.
