I have a 2002 Ford ranger that I bought with no engine(came stock with a 3.0. I found a 3.0 engine out of a 1999 ranger and got the wiring/computer with it. I still have the vehicle side of the harness for the 2002. I installed the engine and kept the 1999 engine harness with the engine but used the 2002 vehicle side of the harness.

when I turn the ignition on all the interior lights come on and everything beeps and stuff like it should. But then when I try to start it it doesnt turn over. One of the relays just clicks once, The relay that clicks turns out to be the blower motor relay.

I tried using the 1999 vehicle harness but where it plugs into the fire wall theres an axtra major plug in (the harness has three big square plug in and the truck only has two) and as soon as i put power to the terminals it turns the starter over(the starter doesnt engage the flywheel)

I'm wondering if i need to get a 2002 3.0 engine harness and try installing it on my 1999 engine?

I am so comfused and frustrated and if anyone could help me out it would be apreciated, thanks

Your best bet would be to find the '02 engine harness. you may need to find some other parts as well but the '99 engine will work in the '02 once you have the right parts.

Not sure right now what the difference is between the two. Could be just wiring but, could also be intake manifold and a bunch of sensors.

Is the PATS key/module from the 2002 body maybe looking for a response from the computer?? Is that possible?

John

I'm not sure. I looked at it some more and figured out i only needed to change the harness that comes off the starter. I found one and installed it and it plugs in correctly. But still does the same thing.

How would I know if its the PATS causing this?

What is the Theft light doing?

Flashing fast?

So, you put a 99 engine and PCM into an 02 truck and body harness.

Yeah, I think PATS is disabling it. The 99 likely had PATS and now it isn't programmed to the 02's key. Do you have the 02's PCM?

I can send you 2000 schematics (EVTM) if you think it'd help.
PM your e-mail address. I don't have any 2002.

The theft light doesnt come on at all. I have the 2002 computer and tried plugging it in and still got nothin.

The 02 doesn't have EGR, they also come with the composite upper intake.

I dont really know a whole lot about the PATS thing. Ive done reading online and i guess its a microchip in the key? I'm not sure if the key is programmed with the truck or the computer? Or what i have to do to get it programmed correctly? I called the ford dealership and all i heard was blah blah blah bring it in and give us money. I cant take it anywhere cause it doesnt run. Any suggestions would be extremely helpful

So Iwent out and tried to start it again and now the fuel pump makes noise like it should. But still no theft light. Still have no idea what it could be. Ive went up and down every wire on the truck about 20 times and I'm certain its correct. Again, I did have the starter checked and its good. No clicking coming fromthe starter or starter relay.

99 3.0

I would check your battery connection. I had the same problem when turning the key just a click. If you have too high resistance in your battery cables it will trip any random relay. Make sure your positive cable is good, The original positive cable on early 2000's Rangers can look good but have very high resistance.

I,m sure the cable is good.

Now when I turn the key to the "start" position the brake light comes on in the dash. Would this mean that its a nuetral safety switch or something? Or maybe the brake has to be on to start it and the switch for that is bad?
