I have a 1998 Ford Ranger with 160,000 miles on it. The engine died (oil all over the driver side of the engine - blown ring or something??). I am thinking about putting in an engine, and have located several options, including a 3 liter from a 2000 ranger (90,000 miles on the engine), and even a 3 liter from a 1991 (68,000 on the engine).

What issues do I need to be aware of regarding changes over the years preventing an easy swap?

This is a "first time" for me doing an engine swap, and I am looking for a straightforward removal and replacement (exact match with bolts and fitting into the engine compartment, etc).

Advice would be appreciated!

The 2000 would be the best bet because its the same engine you have now and it will bolt right up to your truck

I sincerely doubt that 91 has only 68k on it. Probably more like 168 or 268k. At any rate the 2000 is a better engine.

Any year Vulcan 3.0 will work, if you use your intake manifold setup and accessory package & exhaust manifolds. If you use a FWD then change the head gaskets to RWD style.
My 02 has an 07 motor in it.
