alright well pumps in. truck runs. i made sure that every single thing about it is water tight in the wireing. coverd the terminals in rtv after i knew it ran so hopfully this one holds out... im nowhere near as excited this time...

it just better work. im going to try and go out saturday morning, same place i tried to go last weekend. then the weekend after that is the may 24 trip that i really want to be on.

problem is the guy i was going to go out with on saturday (that sas'd mazda) put a chisel through his tire 2 days ago and now has somthing wrong with his hand its very swollen but the doctor says its an infection even though he has no cut.... i dunno how that works.

ill go out alone if i have to. just not a fan of doing that

alright... so im so lost with this thing.... the fuel pump has power somtimes sometimes it doesnt. ive been chasing a wiring gremlin all day and im burnt out. sometimes it has power at the pump sometimes it doesnt. sometimes it has ground sometimes it doesnt... at one point i had a ground at the ground and a ground in the power wire....

i dunno what the f*uck is going on... all i know is im about to get screwed outta ANOTHER test and tune and i have 7 days to get this thing 100% then it has to be on the trailer.

im thinking it has to be the relays its the only thing that would make scense for it switching between having power and not having power. plus they were getting pretty warm... ive checked over every wire under the dash. there is NO chaffing. ive checked the wires all the way to the back to the fuel pump NO chaffing. i dont get it.. i have every single wire loom going to and from the fuel system unwrapped and i dont see anything wrong.

but its a pain because its not like i can go grab a chiltons for a 1988 samurai with a 1994 toyota 2.4 fuel injected motor. every wiring harness is hand done and over the year s its been tapped into so many times that there is no consistant wire color.

heres the two things im thinking of replacing ones a 4 prong relay (round one) and the other is a circuit breaker

alright so i went into town this morning to grab those 2 parts. the relay (round) was 9 bucks and square circuit breaker was closer to $400.....

needless to say i went to the junkyard in hopes to find one and of course it was easier to find all the round ones. i went through 15 trucks and cars and didnt find anything then i went over to the 88 landcruiser i got the front axle from and BAM! theres a circut breaker.

pileorelays.jpg

the round ones are my extra relays for the fuel pump. then theres the 2 circuit breakers one old and one new the old one is the one on the angle.

i opened up the circuit breakers and the new one looks new. the old one looks melted.. so considering it wasnt easy to find and arnt cheap new i wanna know why it melted in the frst place b4 i put the new one in the truck. but of course its pouring out right now

alright guys... im 100% stumped...

put the new relay and circuit breaker in. nothing...... all i can think of is run a new ground with it even though it already has a good ground. maybe its not enough? i dunno..

i dont get it, it has power at the fuel pump terminal, it has a ground at the other fuel pump terminal. but it doesnt turn on. yet when you take the booster pack and hook it to it it'll run... if anybody has ANY ideas im all ears. ive got nothin and this trips in 5 days and i havnt even got out for a shake down run once.

dude, i have no idea. i f-ing hate dealing with electrical gremlins. seeing as how no one else has responded to your posts lately, i thought i'd give some moral support. stick with it, you'll figure it out.

having said that, i've often found, as soon as i start throwing shit, breaking stuff in the garage and just having a good old fashioned freak out fest, i'll finally figure out whatever it is i'm working on. only thing is, i usually have broken something i need and then i have to replace it. so that's always a possibility.

lol whenever i have a freak out all i ever do is break things that i need usually my hand so i try not to do that haha.

having thought about it last night and im going to try adding an extra ground. even though it has a good ground already im sure it cant hurt. and who knows maybe it'll do it. but i doubt it.

so once that doesnt work im thinking maybe that the wires are too small and have too much resistance for this pump. so im going to make my own harness for the fuel pump with a universal 30 amp square breaker and larger diameter wire. and i think that'll get it.

once i do that ill have replaced everything from the fuel pump to the motor and back. and on top of that ill have replaced all the electrical leading to the pump. if its all brand new it has to work. at least thats my thinking we'll see

alright well ive been stupid busy latly sunday i was up at my uncles 2 hours north putting the 350 into his camaro yesterday and the day before i was at my buddys shop getting his skyline ready for safty.

ive had about 15 inutes of my own time to work on this thing, and i completly redid all the wiring for the fuel pump. and didnt cut any of the old wires out because i dunno if the computer relies on a signal or whatever from the pump so its just piggy backed on a seperate circuit. and whadda know... no fuel pump still.

plus when i would go to crank the truck over itd just die. that got me pissed i took 88_eddies advice and ended up almost needing a new passenger door. there is now a nice fist sized dent in it... i ran a set of jumper cables from the ground on the battrey to the block and viola it cranks now. so im waiting on my buddy with that skyline to pick up his tires today and am hoping to grab some 4 gauge stereo wire off him to make a new ground.

but that still leaves me with a dead fuel pump. and now 2 days till my trip. i was talking to another buddy while he was changing my oil. (its just cheaper to get mieneke to do it plus i dont have to find somewhere to deispose of the oil) and he was saying theres a place about 45 inutes away that may have another inline pump for me. i have parts stores looking for one and nobody has found anything. which i find kinda weird...

so hopfully i find a new pump throw it in with the new wiring and see what happens.

ah yes almost forgot because im so lucky and im the 2nd person in 4 years to have a problem with these pumps lowrange is being nice enough to not help me out at all. the only way i can get a new pump is i have to send this one back and they tets it find out its garbage and then they'll send me a new one. and i get to pay all shipping not to mention that that process will take 2 weeks total IF i get another pump.

looks like im officially a marlin and trail gear customer from now on. ohhh yay both of those comapnies are more expensive

too bad about the fuel pump , by the way where did you get the lwb body and frame , also what did you do for motor mounts to mount the toyota motor in the suzuki frame , thanks

I now have a new pump coming in from MSD should be here Friday I'll throw that in and see what happens. Though about going back to an in tank pump so it's less hassle $800.... Nevermind!

As for the body and frame I don't know we got it from a buddy in a 4 wheeling club a
long time ago. They arnt all too uncommon around here now if you want one Inc good shape that's another story.

And the motor mounts I can try and get a pic tommrow for you but is basicly just some square tubing cut on a 45 degree angle at the ends to mimik the Toyota mounts then welded solid to the frame. So it uses all the Toyota motor mounts

no need for a photo i was just woundering how much work it took to mount the toyota motor , i have a plan to get a lwb aqualu aluminum replacement body tub and modify my swb frame to be long enought to fit and swap in a toyota 20r or 22r , also do you have a build thread for your sj410 , thanks

The 22r seems to fit pretty good I have Enough room to get my arm behind the valve cover for the most part. Hedder side again lots of room, main problem is the rad I have about 1/2" between my pulleys and my rad which is why I'm running the pusher style fan. I'd prefer a puller but then I would have to relocate the rad ( it's already on top if the round "crossmember" that these trucks come with. What I'm thinking is scince my front bumper acts like a crossmember anyways is cut that one out and move it down about 3" and forwards about the same and maybe squeeze a fan in there but it's tight.

You will have to stretch the Swb frame the length of the roof area which is about 24" I believe. It's just a guess because we are using a swb soft top as our safari top out back and it just goes from the rear rollbar to the begining of the rear to the cab area.

And as for the sj410 nope no build thread yet. I have to get this thing on the landcruiser axles so i can steal these axles for the sj. I don't wanna dd four wheel drum breaks. But other then the body, paint, spoa, and bumpers it'll stay mostly stock if I can swing it just the samurai axles (packed with 4.56 gears and a spooled rear) and 33" duratracs

alright well heres the starting issue solved. b4 when i would crank the truck recently sometimes itd just click and not have anything happen. and all the lights a fan would quit working. here my problem.

its happened like once every two years its the ground from the battry to the motor. i just threw a set of jumper cables from the battry to the block to be sure that it was the problem and sure enough it turned over. so i went and grabbed some 4 gauge stereo wire from a buddy and replaced the ground with that. heres some pics of that scince ive been slacking with those.

old ground on top and new on the bottom
newvsoldground.jpg

and this is the end of the old one

i really hope that i get some good pictures up here on tuesday. scince i know this thread is been boring. not that it seems like it was ever all that popular

so it was a bad ground? no joke, i was gonna suggest to look at all the grounds, but i figured it wouldnt be that simple. i once chased an electrical problem for weeks myself. replaced the grounds going to the starter and to the block, nothing. on whim, i decided to have the alternator tested and that was it.

well part of it was a bad ground. thats just why the truck wasnt cranking over with the key. it still doesnt run thanks to these garbage pumps lowrange was sending me.. but that should be fixed tommorow morning then tommorow night its being loaded onto the trailer and up north for a 2.5 day trip completly un-tested :headbang:

i had a fun morning today trying to figure out why the lights on the trailer wernt working too. turns out a had a few corroded wires so thats all fixed and as i was tying the wires back up of course the one for my trailer brakes breaks off the connector.... oh well dont need them for this truck anyways its not heavy enough ill deal with that at a later date.
