1988 samurai LWB build

which tire to go to after new axles

alright ive been beating my head against the wall trying to decide what im going to do with the suspension with this thing. :annoyed:

but looking at the pics and talking to sean at low range i found out that the yj kit will NOT work with the LWB frame because my rear hangers are different then a SWB truck so ive been thinking of how to make my own version of new mounts and such and finally just said screw it i just want to drive the damn thing so i bit the bullit and orderd some 1.5" old man emu lift springs this afternoon. should be here in a week or so :icon_thumby:

i didnt want to go with the lift springs because id like to keep the truck low. but the yj swap gives about the same amount of lift anyways the main reason was the $ i figured it would cost much more to ship leaves from utah to ontario then it did so al in all it cost me $560 not really all that bad plus i know they are going to bolt in and then im done

so my buddy has a 1983 toyota hilux and he may be getting a entire front axle to replace his, his is open and the new one has a lockright in it. and i just rememberd that i haev a toyota rear axle in my back yard so i went and threw it into the garage noooo problem.....

ok i lied it was frozen into the ground. i had to get a jack under it to pop it out. then drag it around my house past the gf 63 merc trying not to hit it and into the garage and sweet jesus either im getting outta shape or this thing gained wieght it was very difficult to carry it on my shoulder threw the snow. up the stairs across my deck down another set of stairs.

EDIT: went out and measuered the toyota rear end. its 58" wms and has the 11.6" drums so that means its outta and ifs truck but it is still the 4cyl differential so i know which spool to order. it also means im going to need 1.5" wheel spacers on the front

EDIT EDIT: alright i went and got this thing torn apart to see what im going to need to put in it. destroyed the drums getting them off the springs holding the shoes down broke so when i slid the drum off they'd bind and stop it from comming off.

but other then that it went awsome i indeed have the 30 spline axles havent counted the teeth on the ring gear yet but i can take a random guess and say they'll be 4.10's not that it matters because they arnt staying. but i cant believe how much heavier they are the 30 spline axles have a 1 1/4" diameter and the 26 spline samurai axles are 1" diameter. i somehow dont think ill be breaking anymore axle shafts. when i get my lift in ill get the measurments for the spring perches and move them over on the toyota axle

ok update time i got it back together running good and not over heating i put a new thermostat gasket in the truck. went out to fill it with gas got to the gas staion and it stalled out. i figured i was lucky and just got there in time and filled the truck up. well it turns out the fuel pump took a dump on me.. so ive been dropping the tank for the last 2 days which is not exciting so no pics so far

im going to weld the toyota rear diff for a lincoln locker if ti works it'll stay if it doesnt ill buy the spool which is what i was going to do anyways.

once i get my taxes done im hoping to order the gears and highsteer kit for the toyota front axle. that way they will be ready to go in once i get some 37s.

ill get some pictures when i go out later this afternoon

Going to 5.29's in those axles then?

PICTURES!
first off my new fuel pump. im going to an inline pump just bacause its easier to maintain and service hopfullly after this i wont have to drop the tank anymore
newfuelpump.jpg

where i got to pull the tank out of. it was sooo much fun because of course i thought i was out of gas so i just completly filled the truck... :annoyed:
gastankspot.jpg

the top of my tank after about 15 mins of picking mud off the top so i can see what i need to take off
tank.jpg

this is the pickup i have removed the stock in tank pump and am just going to put a piece of fuel line on the pick up a little longer then where the pump was that way when the fuel sloshes around it can follow the fuel then hopfully when im on an off camber i wont stall out
fuelpickup.jpg

and last but not least here is the toyota axle apart
toyotaaxleapart.jpg

and the comparasion of the toyota shafts vs a spare samurai shaft that i have

and andres yea im going to 5.29 i didnt want to go that high up because ive heard that ppl running that high up had a problem with stripping the teeth off the pinion but they dont make a 5.13 for a toyota and i cannot wrap my head around a doubler for some reason..

I know lots of 'Yota dudes round here running 5.29's on their rigs, so far none of them broke crap... as far as the R&P go anyway. :icon_twisted:

yea... it should be interseting. like i said earlier i broke 2 lincoln lockers 2 weekends in a row and a lockrite on the 3rd weekend. and thats on the 4.56 in the samurai axles. i havnt had a problem with axles this last season just the bearings in the fron carrier but that was my bad too.. i get the feeling that 5.29s and toyota axles with the 37s is gonna get me in trouble. i also have a strange feeling it is going to get flopped this summer dunno why.

... Apparently UPS is f***ing retarded.... my lift was in windsor ontario 5 hours from my house then they shipped it BACK into the states so it can sit at the border AGAIN to come in to port erie and sit there and have to clear customs again. to top it all off port erie is further from my house the windsor... (they shipped it 5 hours in the wrong direction) it coulda been at my house right now

i got that fuel pump in yesterday and primed and all that then went to start the truck completly forgetting that i dont have a fuel filter b4 the pump yet.. that coulda turned out bad

heres the journey my parts are taking and i have no idea why. its backwards so the first place it left is at the bottom

alright so guess what FINALLY made thier way to my doorstep!

DSC00804.jpg

just gotta flip the center pins and throw the bushings in. then its just a matter of tearing the truck apart and throwing them in

:yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:

while they were uploading to photobucket i installed the bushings and flipped the center pins. REMEMBER to always clamp the leaves or they will spread apart on you and just make it way too difficult.

ok i went and dropped my gf off at work this morning and picked up a fuel filter while i was at it its for a 97 ford ranger 4 litre lol i had to do the one on my ranger a while ago and rememberd it would be waay easy to make work on a different truck

newfuelfilter.jpg

then i came home and it was raingng and +1 celcius so i figured id just hang out today watching tv then everything was re runs and the springs were staring at me. so i ended up throwing them in :headbang:

before i put them in i added a stock leaf form another pack i had to help with the weight of the winch and everything
extraleaf-1.jpg

estraleafthickness.jpg

so after that i jacked the truck up and threw the jack stands under the frame just behind the rear spring hangers. i tried to get them as close as i could to the front without being in the way.
standlocation.jpg

i also made sure to keep the jack under the diff just incase it fell i also usually put the tires under there too if i go under the truck that way at least if it falls i should have 12.5" to lay down lol
setup.jpg

so i started pulling out the leafs at the ends and left the u bolts to last.
wasnt so bad the electric impact helped alot id just cracked the nuts with my 24" rachet (i love leverage it makes things so easy) then spun them out with the gun.
halfout-1.jpg

i got a nice surprise when i undid the u bolts all the leafs seperated and kinda fell to the ground. turns out BOTH center pins had broken i have no idea when.
pileoleafs.jpg

centerpinhead-2.jpg

after this i just threw in the new springs and bolted it all back up starting at the leaf ends again then the u bolts last.

this is full droop
liftfulldroop.jpg

shackle angle at full droop pretty close to 90 degrees so i shouldnt have any problems with return i have a picture of the shock at full droop too
shacklefulldrooplifted.jpg

shockshaftfulldroop.jpg

then heres the shock with all the weight back in it much better then the 3/4" i had b4
shockshaftafterlift.jpg

and my shackle angle with the weight on
shackleangleafter.jpg

earlier i showed a picture of my drag link hitting my crossover link so heres the updated one its blurry but i got cold and rushed it
draglinkvstierod-2.jpg

AND last but not least the truck back on its tires after all this
truckafterlift.jpg

my only casualty of the day and it wasnt untill near the end :icon_bounceblue:

thumb.jpg

my poor shirt. soaked and this one was under my rugby jersey
shirt.jpg

thats it untill it stops raining and i get the do the rear springs and the fuel filter then im gonna go see if i can do somthing stupid :icon_twisted:

alright so i was gonna wait for the rain to stop and i t kinda did it started snowing lol
so i went out and tried to get the rear done AND i knew the front went too easy...

snapped a u bolt had to cut out one bolt from the old spring snapped somthing else broke my 24" rachet and a universal extension. then electrocuted myself while using a rachet....

said F*uck it im done for today

rearspring.jpg

for anyone wondering about the difference in the new vs old springs

wow....that really sucks, if its any consolation its pouring rain today and the jyard closed 10 min before I got there, so now I have to wait till monday to get sploder leafs and possibly lift brackets and shocks

lol yea ive been working in the rain all day. usually do i got lucky today and it started snowing

went to tsc and spent a whopping $1.80 to replace the leaf spring bolts i had to cut out. and on monday im going to go get 4 new u bolts made and im just going to cut these ones off. especially considering my favourite rachet (the one i was using to remove the u bolts) stripped all the teeth in it... 24" swivel head matco ratchet the thing was awsome! and of course i cant get it warrentied untill next week when my dad aka the matco guy gets back from jamaica lol

ok so because my lift is on hold untill monday i decided to finish up the diff in the toyota rear axle. so i took it to my buddys shop pulled it all apart and welded the spiders up

zacwelding.jpg

reardiffweld-1.jpg

i took the torch to it pre-heated the gears some and burnt off all the leftover gear oil welded the gears together in the corners then cut a piece of 1/8" flat stock plate to fill up between the gears, welded that all the way around to all the gears then welded the gears to the carrier itself.

shouldnt move lol. worst comes to worst it breaks and i order the spool the way i had originally planned. hopfully this works and it saves me $180.

so afterwords i wrapped the bearings with rags and filled a steel bucket halfway full with absorbal threw the diff in. litrallly lol it was god damn hot. coverd it the rest of the way with absorbal and ill go pull it out in a day or two once its cold.

i buried it in the absorbal to slow the cooling as much as i could hopfully this will make it less brittle
