Well, I finally have a 4x4 truck. except it doesn't run. timing's off. I got some good photos of it, especially the awfully grimy undercarriage. which is covered in ATF. when i tried cranking it, it leaked atf real good. couldn't tell where it was coming from. well anyways.

The timing still sucks, have to get at that bolt and clamp. The atdf leak is coming from the dipstick tube. So I picked up a grommet from work. Anyone know how the dipstick tube comes out?

Not exactly sure in your case. I've seen the tube attached to the engine/trans bolt. Undo the nut and twist out the tube. I've never actually done a 2.9 tho so YMMV.
Good luck.

In my ranger it just pulled out, it was a 2 piece dipstick tube, on the top piece had a bolt on the bell housing? Maybe I can't remember it was just to secure it

On the 2.8 the dip tube is held in from two studs holding the valve cover on not sure on the 2.9.

Well today I was able to put a good bit of gas in her because I noticed yestidy that the low fuel light was on. So I think I put about three gal of ethanol free in and tried starting it. It ran longer, but still died. Also as soon as I hit the gas it died. It backfired two or three times as well. So I spent the time I had (5:25 or so till bout 5 min ago trying to get the crank pulley to TDC and get the cap off the dizzy. But it just got way too cold too quick (34° when I came inside) to keep working. And getting that stupid cap off is too frustrating when your bout frosty. Close but no cigar.

34* isn't that cold. A few years ago I pulled and rebuilt the dis, reinstalled it, and retimed the engine. I started after work (because it left me sit) at 5:00 and it was 20* when I started. It just got colder as I went.

well, uh, guess i aint as crazy as i thought. am i headed in the right direction or am i chasin' mah tail?

Ok got the cap off the dizzy. Which end of the rotor should be pointing at the #1 wire? Side with the tab that fits in the little hole? I sound real NOOBISH here but its been about 5 years since i worked with distributors. :icon_confused:

WELL, the rotor was pointing the opposite direction. So i gotta turn it around. I decided to get rid of the AC system, to make some room to get to the back of the engine. Well, it's not so easy. the heater core box is bolted to the firewall with studs, that are underneath, so you end up being twisted in the engine compartment like a noodle. still need to loosen two nuts under the box, then maybe it'll kindly remove itself from the situation. then i can get at the distributor easier.

The side with the metal end should point to #1. Personally, I think removing the heater box is harder.
Good luck,

Richard

yeah, its a PITA all right. but i'm never running AC in the thing anyway. Its just taking up space. I don't know. I'm going to loosen the distributor and get the firing pin(haha) pointed in the right direction, do that tomorrow. Hopefully it will be running before i go to work!

well, i haven't got her runnin yet, the rotor was pointing the wrong way(again) because i disremembered where the #1 plug on the cap was. so back to work again. one day this baby gonna run. hopefully.

Don't be too hard on your self. These things are character builders, and you will feel proud once its running.
