MOTOR WILL NOT TURN OVER 1996 4X4 4.0 AUTO

This has been an intermittent problem. Can turn the key on and start by jumping the starter solenoid. What other Saftey locks are there besides being in park position are there for the starting sequence. When I try to start a few times in a row the door locks will engage then disengage. Have changed out the ignition assembly still the same result.

That circuit should still run through the clutch switch wiring. It just has a jumper for the automatic transmissions. Maybe it's loose?

^^^ That, makes me wonder if the truck has a keyless entry or security system installed. An old one could still be present, even if it no longer has fobs to operate it.

It is unlikely, and off the wall, as the cause of your trouble, but the door locks cycling like that is weird. Just something else to check for.

I use a fob to unlock the truck and it does have a security system. When I pull the chip it wont start. When I plug the chip back in, it will start with the jerry rigged starter button.
