I have a 2001 Ranger Extended cab with the FIXED doors, so the rear speakers are under the extended cab windows. I chatted with Crutchfield and it seems some 5 1/4 speakers top mount or bottom mount and depending on which style, they may or may not fit. Any suggestions on a budget friendly speaker for that location that I can re-use the factory grill cover with?

I'm sure it'll get some crap. But just about anything new is a major improvement from 20 year old stock paper speakers. I'm partial to Pioneer myself. The specs aren't impressive in any way, but a complete system of Pioneer in my wife's car is just like being in the front row at a concert with good roadies. The Scosche stuff is remarkably similar and is priced at darn near free... If your local Wal-Mart has the ones ya need in stock.

Infinity Reference REF-8632CFX This is what I used for my 2001 supercab, but I had the rear opening doors. I've had them for almost three years now and I've been happy with them.

Im a Kenwood guy myself, reminds me of high school 35 years ago. I was more wanting confirmation of the size.

I'm a novice but my advice is take one of the old ones out and use it for comparison.
Best way to know size is to have the right size in your hands.

Should be 6x8's in the back under the windows, and 6½ in the front doors. I just did my '89 and spent $180 including a Bluetooth head unit. It was all in stock at Walmart. I went with kicker 3 way speakers and it sounds modern and crisp. Would recommend.

I just checked and they are indeed 6x8, not sure what Crutchfield was talking about, they said I had 5 1/4.....

Yup same happened to me but my spidey senses saved me some time

I have an 04 and the front door and rear under the window are both 6x8. I am pretty sure from my research the ones Crutchfield recommended will also work with a small mounting adapter. I upgraded my head unit and installed new Pioneer 6x8 in the four factory spots. There was a cheap wiring adapter that made it plug and play with the factory speaker wire.
