So I was messing around with my truck the other day, and while I was changing tires I thought I'd see if I could get my warn hubs to fit, so I took off the plastic auto piece and the hubs fit and now my 4x4 works, is there any special reason to buy the $50 conversion nuts?

Thanks: Steve

The plastic cam holds the nut locking piece in. Without it in place there's a good chance the left wheel will fall off and the right one will jam up solid.

Isn't there a keyway in it?

Yea there's a good reason. It's due to that tiny little key (as mentioned above) being the only thing holding that nut in place. With the "conversion", you have an inner and outer nut, tightly locking the threads in place. The conversion nuts are everywhere. Hell go to the junkyard and pick up a set of them on any ford or chevy dana 44 with lockouts.
