I know you like cheap and easy fixes, the knob on my '97 was extremely loose when I got it, I don't think it was even on when I picked it up... I put a strip of duct tape over the stub and pushed the knob back on, it's worked for over a year... I got the idea in my '90 (or was it the '91 explorer?) since the only thing I had was some dried up old used duct tape sitting around and that worked for a couple years until I went to an aftermarket knob...Drove it for an hour or so away from home. Let it stretch its legs a bit, got 'er up to 65 and my shifter knob started to rattle. Time to find a new one.
