No one has any ideas on how to make this ranger tranny more reliable?

I do some moonlighting working for my Buddy who owns a transmission shop. I will tell you the same thing He tells everyone. If you want to make a used transmission more reliable, rebuild it. It needs to at least be opened up and inspected to satisfy what you are trying to accomplish. You have no idea what it's been through. A used tranny is really a shot in the dark.

That said, the weakest link in the 4R's is the valve body and EPC solenoid. I would suggest a Sonnax valve body and EPC upgrade.

I would agree with the above statement, and add that an automatics worst enemy is heat, an aftermarket cooler is a requirement.

Great point. A larger cooler is a great idea.
