Nahhh....

Ill pull 2 plug wires off a knocking ticking smoking 2.9 and still beat a 3.0s ass...and then bang its gf afterwards.

Oh wait....nvm...the 3.0 doesnt like girls

Didn't even know this was a thing to do. When I picked up my shortblock that were insistent that I use oil with zinc.

zinc is a lubricant additive that is needed for flat tappet cams/lifters.

zinc is also a heavy-metal that the EPA and Greenies hate.

Anything with a flat tappet cam should have a oil with alot of zinc in it. Since flat tappet cams are pretty much non existent anymore, modern oils don't have much zinc. Zinc pollutes and is bad for catalytic converters so there was just no good reason for oil companies to keep adding it to their oils. When you have a old engine with a flat tappet cam you just add in some zddp additive.

Thats where I got confused, 99% sure, my 98 expo motor is a roller, he had along explanation similar to above posts. Still said I should use "classic car motor oil" 15-40 or similar with a minimal zinc content of .14%

15-40 is a common diesel oil. look for "CD" in the specs.
with higher compression than gas diesels need better oil for the bearings.
that better oil works just fine on gas bearings.

the newer oils must be adequate for flat tappets, (maybe, keep reading) Duratec 2.3 & 2.5 I-4s have flat "cam followers" that do the same task as lifters.
however, the cam followers don't have as much pressure on them as lifters where the pressure is multiplied by between 1.5 and 1.8 ratios.
AND, since the 4 valve engines use lighter valves the springs aren't even close to a 2 valve springs pressure so maybe the newer oils aren't all that great for vintage flat tappets.

Over head cams may be similar to flat tappets in that they don't have rollers between the cam and bucket/lifter but that's where the similarity ends. As you pointed out they just don't experience anywhere near the wear and pressure of a true pushrod flat tappet cam. I would argue that the stress and wear on a overhead cam is actually even less than that of a full roller pushrod engine.

my 2005 2.3 has never had the top opened up, currently at 364,800 miles.
doesn't tick any louder than it did when new.
