So I ran across a used 4.0l from a 95 explorer or ranger I'm waiting back on more info from the guy. He wants 350 obo here in rapid city, SD does this seem like a fair price to the rest of you? Lastly is there any things I should look out for if I go to look at it?

Greetings from a fellow Rapid City resident!

$350 seems fair to me if you can hear it run. If not it seems like a big gamble. I would try to find out how many miles are on it, check the oil for coolant contamination, could even pull the spark plugs. They should all look the same, if you have one or two really clean ones, that could indicate coolant leaking into that cylinder. How much oil and grime buildup are on the block, etc.

Thanks I was hoping you would chime in. I've seen you on here and figured you know the area better. I'm still waiting on the guy to reply back so I have more info to go off of.

I don't know what the junkyards charge for an engine, B&B or A1 or Aggressive would be the only yards locally I'd trust with something like that. car-part.com has a bunch of engines listed if you're willing to drive a couple hundred miles.

I will let you know if I run across anything. If you're on Facebook, try posting a want ad on the Mans Barter Black Hills Area group... I have good luck with that one.

The 4.0l OHV engine was very reliable, usually a safe bet, but used is still a bet, a gamble.

These engines had a weak casting in the heads between valve seats, if overheated they would crack there, so like Shran said pull the spark plugs for a look.
