Hello

Well I was heading to my destination on the highway in 5th (OD). Couldn't get it out of fifth while trying to downshift. The truck is stuck in 5th. Now, for some diagnosis. The clutch seems fine, as I have pressure in the pedal, and the fact, when depressed, the truck will roll fine. When I engage the clutch, the truck stalls in 5th, no noises etc. So I assume my clutch is fine. I seen others around here with a similar problem. The shifter seemed to have some play, but it wasnt so bad, so I never bothered fixing it. Does this sound like I need new shifter bushings? There is no play however now in the shifter as its stuck in gear.

thanks

Upon inspecting the shifter bushings it seems they are ok. The spacer isn't broken. Neither are the other washers. What could it be? The truck feels like it's in neutral via the shifter, but its stuck in gear. Did 5th gear syncro melt to the main shaft?

My credo
the grey-t escape
have you checked your oil level? might just pull the trans and take off the top cover, you may or may not see anything. i lost 2nd once, couldnt see anything, but the 1st gear on the input shaft just inside the case showed some wear. is the end of the shifter possibly broke off? ive never heard of that, but it doesnt mean it couldnt happen.

"stuck in 5th" is a new one on me, but in any case if it isn't the
shifter I don't have any news for you that you actually want to hear.

You'll need to pull it out and take the top cover...

At which point you can properly "embrace the horror"

Even I the local manual transmission guru have expereienced a catastrophic failure.

In my case I was at low speed and snapped off my transmission output shaft.

with the shifter removed you cant budge anything in the trans. at this point I guess i'm going to either scrap the truck, or put in a junkyard trans. Im a noob with transmissions though, so. But i'm mechanically inclined at some level. Also, I seen a rebuilt unit on ebay m5r1, for years 88-94. But my truck is a 95. Will this unit work? They want 625$

an UPDATE. Trans finally is out, it decided to move just about 10 mins ago. So now for the carnage... Will take pictures of the damage and post. Trans was removed without the Y-Pipe coming out....

Chris, were you actually able to take a picture of the "extra" part
that was causing the problem?

no sir, unfortunately not... I wanted to, but forgot my camera.... Anyhow just so it's clear "the extra part" was a useless roll pin up in the shifter housing, not removed by an incompetent mechanic.. However the mainshaft endplay was taken care of :icon_thumby:

Yeah, new brass and "tight endplay" usually makes them shift well

I've got my crossmember and rear driveshaft up, but I'm still fighting
with the exhaust...

I lack three hands.

That truck still isn't running yet? Now I don't feel bad for forgetting to call you on Friday to tell you that the junkyard gas was out.

Between weather and other factors it's been a long bitchy fight.

And Rich called me.

I would've had it today I had help available
but it was rainy when I got up and my help and I headed
out to EZ for a hardware hunt (to replace the bolts I cut getting it off)
and we got back and in the time it took to go inside take a pee and grab
a cup of coffee a t-storm rolled in and I was afraid the truck was going
to blow away....

Seven bolts plus the front driveshaft and the shifter boot and I'm done.

think of all the gas I HAVE NOT burned in the last six weeks
