there is a 98 cobra near me for sale. Its been in the classifieds since last fall. its got 80k and black bullit wheels with the chrome lip. Only thing is its yellow, but I may be able to deal with that. They want just under 9k for it, im hoping to offer 7k and walk away with it. Anyone have any experience with the 96-98 cobras? From what I have read they are a great car and well put together.

yeah but pricey to do performance work on. If I had the cash for one, i'd try to make it as OE as possible again and shelter it driving it occasionally for a weekend toy, but that's me.

Nice cars but doing any mechanical work on the motor can get expensive, not just performance work. All these new mod motors are so much more complicated (expensive). Guy I know ended up having to do some front engine work on his, cost him $40 for the replacement harmonic dampener bolt.

I would take one, the 4.6 is a good engine. Is that a DOHC one? I don't know if that style had it or if it was just the later squarish ones that had that.

I would put stock Bullits on it and call it good, leave it for a cruiser. Not a fan of black rims...

Sometimes parts places have problems figuring out how much to charge for stuff, it was $25 for the plastic knob for the lights on my F-150, it couldn't have cost more than $.25 to make it and put a dot on it. Can't run the lights without it though. Nothing much newer than 1990 is going to be really cheap or easy to work on.

didnt go look at it today, im going to wait till I have money in hand to go look at it. Im not in a hurry to get a mustang, trying to find one that is just right, or get a great deal. I probably wouldnt want to pay more than 7k for it even though I know its worth 9k. Its been at the small dealership for almost a year now.

DOHC would be 4v, the 3V are SOHC and didn't come along until later.

It won't be pretty, for sure call around before you get it.

Its a completely different engine than the SOHC. Its all aluminum, where the SOHC is an iron block.

Your best bet is to just call your insurance company and get a quote.

I know they are completely different between the dohc and sohc. I was stating that the 98 down is non pi heads on a sohc, but was unsure if they had pi heads at all for dohc's.

If it's the right car, yellow looks good. This is my 2001 Cobra:

Insurance runs about $1000/year for full coverage. I'm 26 with a clean record.

ill def check up on insurance first then. I figured it would run a little high, but 1000 a year aint bad in my eyes. I may wait a little while till i get a little more funds so I wont be broke if I buy it.

98 Cobra is DOHC, 4 valves per cyl, 305 hp. It is a sweet car & yes things get expensive. I have a hard time picturing Bullitt wheels on one though. :icon_confused:

I have owned mine for 8 yrs, only drove it on weekends & kept it in the garage. Been parked for over 2 yrs because I thought it had a bad head gasket, & even advertised it for sale recently, with the head gasket problem stated in the listing. I changed my mind & decided to fix it & sell it. Well, I am glad I did, because I found out just today that it is not the head gasket, it is a cracked head. :icon_surprised::pissedoff::temper:

I would have felt like total s??t if I would have sold it to somebody & told them it was a head gasket. Needless to say, I am looking at thousands of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$! I will never be able to afford to fix it, so now I am stuck with a car that I can never fix & probably can never sell......Sorry for the useless info, your timing on this post came at the most opportune time.

Anyway, the 98 Cobra is a sweet car overall. I loved mine for the roughly 6 yrs I got to enjoy it. Just be prepared to spend $$ if something goes wrong. Here is a couple of pics of mine, I don't know how to make the pics bigger.
