You all helped me with my fuel pressure reg prob, but... The damn thing still smokes after changing it! I'm afraid its bad... any ideas? Its blowing grayish blue smoke now, and i'm not losing any coolant. My boss is giving me his 91 exploder, moter runs good but tranny went out. Is it hard to swap a 4.0 exploder with a 4.0 ranger? Im not a mechanic but have changed a motor in a falcon. any diferences between the truck and the suv? also, the exploder is a 91 and the ranger is a 92, is that gonna be ok? I live in california and i know how they are with smog laws and all... Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

No, that swap should be as easy as they come. You can also use a 4.0L from an Aerostar minivan.

You'll have a HELL of a time finding even the slightest differences between those engines.

Technically, you need a sticker to do the retrofit, but no smog tech on God's green earth will be able to tell the difference even if he's looking. Even all the part numbers (which encode the model and year) are the same.

The only way to tell the difference is with the casting numbers. No one is going to even go anywhere near that far. I'll be extremely surprised if your smog tech even takes a look at the transmission (the neutral switch is an emissions device, and is supposed to be checked, but I've never seen that happen).

The casting numbers are the same on a 92 Vs a 91 4.0

the DATE codes would be different but you ain't gonna find anyone who
can find them let alone read them.

The 4.0 engines from '91-92 are identical.

MAKG mentions the Aerostar motor? Agreed, but with one caveat:
The exhaust manifolds are different, other than that....

Even the accessory brackets are the same on an aerostar engine.

But the Explorer engine? Nobody will ever know. unless you tell them.

there isn't the slightest difference. just disconnect the wiring
at the connectors on the driver's side inner fender and next to
the alternator bracket on the passenger side, because even
the ON-Engine wiring harness is identical

BTW, you will want to keep "spares"
the radiator, Y-pipe Catylitic converter, P/S pump (on the proper bracket)
AC compressor and lines, etc... are all worth their weight in GOLD when
you discover you need one

another thing that can be critical is the serpentine belt idler pullies and tensioner assembly, those things can be expensive and if you've got spares... you won't need to discover on a saturda evening that the local auto parts store is out of stock.

And yes you are not supposed to put a used cat on an engine but who's
going to know unless you tell them?

CATs have always been expensive but they've gotten much worse lately.

There is only one difference that comes to mind...
Your '92 Ranger MAY have the better, later design (internal fan) alternator,
the 91 explorer probably won't.
