Relitively new here and have done some looking to see what I could find out about going from a 2.9 to a 2.0 or 2.3. Currently the truck I have has the 2.9 and 5 spd and is an 88 2wd short bed. I'm about fed up with the v-6. I've had really good luck the 2.3's in the past. My question is this: Will the 5spd trans from my v-6 work on the I-4. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance for any help provided.

no. the bellhousing bolt patterns are different.

for this swap you'll need it all. the engine, transmission, engine wiring harness, computer, all acossiated sensors, belt driven accessories. the 2.9's radiator connections are "backwards" from the 2.3's, so that will have to be addressed as well.

you can re-use your current transfer case, if equipped. you may be able to reuse your current drive line(s) depending on the year of the donor vehicle.

Wicked Sludge, thanks for the info. Kind of a bummer because of the 2.9 that is in it currently. It's just been one problem after another. I guess I'll start looking for a I-4 Ranger. Would like to find one with the carb set-up too. But we'll see whats out there. Again, thanks for the info.

Exactly what I was gonna suggest. It will be more beneficial to buy a new ranger. Ocala4sale.com, we have about 4-5 rangers for sale down here for less than 1000 dollars. 2-3 are 4wd.
