Oil Filter was stuck on my John Deere Riding Mower. Last time I changed the filter it was only hand tight. I don't know how it got so tight. Tried everything under the sun to get it to budge. Broke my filter wrench in the process. Tried the screwdriver thru the filter blah blah etc etc. I got very GRUMPY. If this happens to you don't even screw around with it. Just order this tool. Even with this tool I had to use a 3/4" piece of conduit to extend the socket wrench for leverage to get the da#n filter remnant loose. I put extra oil on the new filter gasket this time.

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

Me, too. In fact, I still haven't done last year's mower service. So, do I need to do it twice this spring?

I usually use my big channel locks if there is room.

The screwdriver trick ive never had alotta luck with, i usually just further tear up the filter housing with no progress.

Ive noticed filters sometimes magically get tighter. No idea why

I don't know that I have ever even topped off the oil in my mower. In fact, I'm almost sure that when I bought it, I filled it with used motor oil. It also sits outside in a bush all year long.

Now I feel bad for my lawn mower.

To prevent this from happening in the future, put a small amount of grease on the o-ring seal rather than oil. I have started doing this with Mercury 2-4-C grease on every engine I service. It has Teflon in it. I have literally had to pull the entire engine out boats, due to limited access, when the filter is stuck and shreds to pieces.

On "occasions" when dealing with removing a stubborm OilFilter, came up with 2 HomeMade tools pictured below.
1st one is just a cheap StrapWrench, modified by bending handle for tight spaces & adding a JamBolt+Nuts to allow using a Socket+Extension.
2nd one is a "LastResort"Wrench, made of Bolts+Washers+JamNuts; requires cutting Filter with TinSnips down to SpinOnPlate, then using this tool.
Since last having to remove a stuck OilFilter, switched to K&N HP Series OilFilters with the EasyOffHexNut; problem eliminated.

I've used band style oil filter wrenches with the swiveling handle and the strap wrenches with the rubber strap when I run across a filter that is too tight. The screwdriver trick has never worked for me and I've had mixed success with the cup style filter tools, which have their own access issues as well.

If you go thru the mower you will end up in a zillion pieces. Please don't go thru the mower.
If the mower is in one piece then I will have to mow!

These clamp wrenches are really good at removing stubborn filters.
