I know this isn't a major issue or anything but, I have bought a 98 ranger recently and all is great with it except when i start it up right at the verge of firing up it squeals extremely loud and is annoying. Anyone have any idea what it is and how to stop it? It almost sounds like a belt slipping but it's only briefly at start-up. I'd figure a belt would be nonstop til treated/repaired.

I chased the same issue on a 98 jeep gc. I tracked it down to the alternator pulley being worn so that the belt sides don't have sufficient grip when the alternator is trying to put back into the battery what has just been taken out during the start. As it only did it for a minute or so after starting I decided to just say sod it, as long as it's not continuous it can be lived with. You might want to check that it's not the cam sensor making the noise, that would require immediate attention.

Take a sharpie and draw and arrow on the belt pointing to the driver's side.

Take the belt off and put it back on so it points at the passenger side.

See if the noise is still there.

Might also be a weak tensioner

I have the same problem on my 01. At first I thought it was the belt but after further examination, I have narrowed it down to the tensioner. Everything else on my truck is fairly new.
