This guy I know his wife just hit a curb with their Ranger and the tire is mangled. They have spare but it there is a lock in the slot between the bumper and tailgate where you put the handle to lower the spare tire. They don't have the key. The truck was bought used. Does anybody know how to get that lock out or if the key should be the same as the ignition? I was thinking he is going to have to drill the cylinder out but I'm not sure. Any help would be appreciated. I think it is a 2000 stepside 2 wheel drive.

I took a hammer and punch to mine. Made short work of it.

The ignition key won't work. It's a special key just for the spare tire. It's about 4-5 inches long. I don't know if you can have one made especially for the Ranger, or if you'd have to replace the entire lock. But to get the spare out...yeah, might have to cut it out, or punch it out like triumph said.

Snip it off with bolt cutters. Or see if the stealership can help you out using the vin#. Its quicker and easier to snip the bastard...
