I have a 97 2wd supercab 4.0 st. stock

225/70r14 tire recommended on door post

Looking for winter tires and it seems this size is hard to find.

I am considering 205/75r14s but they reduce overall diameter a little. Also considering 215/75r14s but they increase overall diameter a little.

I have a pair of 14 inch rims but will have to buy another pair to have a full set. I would consider buying 15" rims if the advantage were significant.

The tire I am considering is Goodyear Nordic @ $75 each.

Any suggestions?

i'd check the axle ratio you have in the rear axle. anything close to 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, etc. and i'd make the switch to 15in wheels. there are just way more options for you doing that and your engine has the power to turn them easily. and there are way more nice, used 15in wheels out there so it's not breaking your budget doing the swap. just my $.02

My '97 2wd has the stock 14" wheels on it.

Summer and winter tires are 205/70-14. I bought 'em that size because that's what was on it when I got it...later I discovered that the factory tire was actually a 225/??-14 (can't remember the aspect ratio off the top of my head), but I haven't bought tires since then.

Being a tired old 4-cylinder, I never really load it heavy enough to worry about it... (That truck has 4.10 gears, too...but even so, I don't wanna make it any slower, so 15" rims are out.)

205/70-14 used to be a pretty common size...it's fallen out of favor, lately, but last time I bought tires they were still pretty easy to find.

That said...all I'm telling you is what I've done, and that it worked- not that it's necessarily a good idea.

I have 205/75-14 Cooper Arctic Claw TXI studded on my 96 B3000. Stock is 225/70-14. The TXI are entry level winter tires that are on the cheap side....a set of four cost me $522 including studding, mounting, balancing and 12% taxes. The Goodyear Nordics are probably about the same in cost when on sale. Had the predecessor to Nordics (Wintertrac)....wasn't very happy with them....no more Nordic/CT tires for me.

My credo
"220, 221, whatever it takes."
I'd get the 215/75-14's, not enough difference in diameter to notice or affect the speedo much at all. Agree with the above though, look for some used 15" Ranger or Explorer wheels or whatever. Much better selection in 15" tires. 225/70-15 is pretty common and stock on late-model 2wd Rangers.

Find a set of 15" rims it will be much easier to find winter tires for, as summer tires are made for everywhere winter tires aren't as popular so yeah... a more popular size rim will help even with price.

I would reccomend a 15" rim with a 215/70/15 or something close. I would also get Hankook Winter Ipikes! those are grippy little MOFO's.
