I remember when you could buy Ford 302 long blocks, and 351 Lincoln by blocks all day long for $750 remanufactured by target, not the department store

I remember that, too I also remember making $6.40 an hour, paying my mortgage and bills while my wife stayed home with the baby. Things weren't cheaper, a dollar bought more than it does now.

I think vehicle manufacturers would rather we keep swapping out vehicles for new ones as much as possible. Dealers would be the same. Especially with leases where they can sell and make money off a vehicle twice.

People like us are counter to that. Yes, they may make some money from parts sales, at least until the vehicle warranty ends.

Heck, Ford was trying to get me to trade in the 2019 about two years after I got it. The thing hasn't been paid off yet and they were looking to make another sale. I'm sure enough people follow that model to make the effort worthwhile or they wouldn't do it. To me, that's like throwing hard earned money down the toilet. But some people are just steering wheel holders and don't want to deal with the maintenance that comes with owning a vehicle more than a few years.

Agree. There is a lot of truth (and reality) in that.

But people like us need those people. Somebody has to create the used vehicles we want.

Glad to hear another deluded throwback of bygone era Rick W. We're some of the last people left that can rebuild carbs and set points on prehistoric motors.

I do remember a time when cars broke down more often and when some wouldn't start on colder days. Cars are getting safer too.

Man, i remember i always kept a box of matches to set the points by feel in my vw karmann ghia since they always seemed to go out on a dark road with no light posts on it.

I love rebuilding carbs. I used to go the junkyard to find oddball carbs to rebuild and keep in the garage. I would try all kinds of weird carbs on my ghia to take to make it feel quicker, ha ha ha.

I love the way they look, especially Hollys which served me well back in the day.

Yup. I really like carbs. They are so simle and easy to work on. Tbi fuel injection is just as simple though and works great too with very little sensors. The chevy tbi used in the late 80s/ early 90s can be adapted to any engine and is super dependable

But I remember limping home on burned points back then too. Sold state ignition is much better but it won't do that....

I'm hard core Holley. Ran mechanical secondary double pumpers in my hotrod days. Way easier to adjust, repair, and rebuild than AFB or QuadraJet carbs.
Gotta mortgage your house to buy one now.

You have a Ghia? I once drove one of those. They are collectors' items now. I'm sure.

Not anymore. I had one for about 12 years and sold it one day. I regretted it the next day and have looked at them many times to find a replacement but its just not the same. I bought it when i was 20 and in the army for 1300 bucks. I put 3 or 4 motors in it learning that air cooled vws require main seal leaks to be fixed immeditaly, they are not like other vehicles that you can drive around with a small rear main seal like forever on. Once it starts leaking, you have about 30 mins till the engine locks up
