Yes, if your 1998 PCM was programmed as "gas only" then the Flex Fuel injectors would cause it to think there is a fuel delivery problem.Hello, I have a 1998 3.0 4x4 autotrans ext cab xlt Ranger without PATS. I replaced the blown motor with a 1999 3.0 from a flex fuel Ranger with a PATS system. I only used the 99 maf and it will start and run but not well, it shows error codes P0172,P1504,P0401,P1132,P1152,P0175. I can drive it everything works no problems other rough idle and the codes. I replaced the PCM with the one from the 99 flex fuel ranger and it will not start . Is there a pin out on the ecc/pcm that I can jumper or relay to get it to run ? Is it possible to remove the pats module from the 99 and install it on the 98 ? I am not sure but I understand that the injectors from the flex engine are a higher volume than the ones in the 98 and may be my problem with all the codes, most indicate running too rich . Do you think replacing the injectors to match the original pcm on the 98 would help ? Thank you .
Example: 1998 PCM opens gas only injector for 100ms(milliseconds) and gets 1gram of gasoline, if it opens a larger flex fuel injector for 100ms it gets 1.5grams of gasoline.
O2 sensor tells PCM exhaust is RICH, so PCM only opens injector for 90ms, then check again, if still RICH then 80ms open time, ect....
If 60ms gets OK exhaust then that's a 40% difference and PCM sets RICH codes, because it's calculation are way too far off.
0-14% are acceptable, above 15% PCM will set a code
1999 PCM won't work at all without PATS hooked up, no way around that, take it back.
1999 PCM also needs it's specific PATS module, the exact same one it came with from the factory, they are "married", only a Ford Dealer can "remarry" PATS modules and PCMs, $$
Put 1998 PCM back in and swap to your 1998 injectors, or swap the whole upper and lower intakes.
1998 and 1999 MAF are the same, not an issue.
