Yes it does, otherwise you would lose pressure.

Not sure if factory used them, some people make their own

Oil pumps provide way more oil than an engine can use, thats where oil pressure comes from, its back pressure, the pressure of the oil the engine can't use at that time
And any leaking oil at the pump/block surfaces just drips into the pan

The seal/gasket for the pick up tube is so pump doesn't suck in air

I don't remember one being there when I removed the pumped but I noticed that some pumps come with them and some don't.

There is no gasket. The aluminum pump body crushed slightly when tightened down and makes the seal.

I feel like it would be better to make one and have one there but is there any advantages or disadvantages in doing this?

I've never installed a pump without a gasket. I've definitely had to make my own several times but still think it's one of those things that doesn't really make sense not to use. Its literally like 2 cents worth of gasket paper and most ford engines aren't exactly great for oiling to begin with.:dunno:

I think I had to make one when I put my 2.3 together. Couldn't find a new one and the original was like a thin little sheet of paper, not like typical gasket material. 5 years later, it's working great although both the pump and the block are cast iron, not aluminum like Andy said.

I have some gasket books from Fel-Pro and Mahle that almost resemble a McMaster-Carr catalogs and no luck there or anywhere else. No kit sold for this engine seems to have one. I just made one.

Its pretty easy to just press the pump onto some paper to make an outline and cut out the shape with a exacto.

The factory Ford oil pump has an aluminum body. When I rebuilt my 2.8, there was no gasket. Parts books, service manuals, no listing or illustration of a gasket anywhere. Not even a trace of sealant on the old pump.

In my rebuild I used a NOS D4ZZ-6600-A, aluminum body.

Base of original pump, NOS pump and pickup tube installed, base of Ford remanufactured Pump I didn’t use—all aluminum. No gaskets for any of these where they meet the block.

I'm not questioning whether or not ford put them on at the factory or if they existed. I've seen some engines with them, some without. My point was just... why not? :dunno: You can't hurt anything by using one and its such a cheap simple thing.
