well I opened it up and this is what I found. Its a 97 M5od it was free should I try to fix it. Not sure how hard that would be or how much it would cost. Should I try to find another one (hopefully free again). Both the top and bottom gear are gone. The bottom is much worse than the top. What gear is that and what caused it. The front of the trans to the right side.

That's third gear. If nothing else is damaged, you'll need third gear, the entire lower countershaft (called the cluster gear), a set of bearings, and the two shaft nuts in the back. Keep in mind that when you tear the transmission down you may find or create other problems, driving the price up.

Price those parts, price a reman, and see what you'd prefer.

IF 3rd gear is the only thing wrong, a 3rd and cluster gear won't be too bad. BUT, you have to ask what happened there. What can eat up 3rd? The chunks broken off of it are quite likely to have caused other damage. For that reason, I agree it's most likely junk.

But you can't tell for sure until you tear it down and inspect everything.

Yep it will be junk soon. I talked to my buddy at the local Ford Dealership and at his cost for parts I had him stop around $700.00
