I had been wanting a winch forever. Finally found a great deal and set to figuring how to mount this up to my Ranger.

I found an old transfer skid plate in my junkyard and started fooling around with placement.

That was a bit too low so I messed around some more and found a place and a technique that works. This also raises my bumper/grille guard up where it should be.

I didn't like the space behind the bumper so I formed up some aluminum plate for a filler, later I will frame it to support someone standing on it.

I'm still deciding on whether to put back on the chrome bumper to go with the grille guard or to put on an OE full grille guard in black with the black bumper.

Looking good, Bro. I too was looking for a good deal on a Warn for my 06 Wrangler. I thought I would buy one on Ebay since I see them new all the time with free shipping. Than about a week before I started to buy a new one I found a 9,000 lb Warn that was mounted but never really used. The owner and his wife had come into a bad time and wanted to get their ride back out on the trail. I was talking to them at an off road BBQ and they asked me if I wanted a new Warn that had only been turned on and tested but never winched yet. I said sure!! They asked me to give them $300 and I gave it to them on the spot!!! Looks great and works great as well.

Knock, knock. Who's there? A good deal!!! Yes!! I was stoked to buy that Warn winch!!!!! A lot of my buddies were pissed because they did not even walk over to talk to the couple. The guys wife was a real looker!!! I told everybody...You snooze, you loose'!!!!

Is that a transfer case skid plate? If so I don't know how much pressure it will take. I like the idea though, just becareful using it for anything heavy.

It is a transfer skid, same thickness as frame rail.
I thought about strength, etc and still have some flat stock bracing to put in. For now the mount will be fine, I am not expecting to pull myself back onto the road anytime soon.

I could write it up. Probably when I take it apart to weld some brackets as I didn't take many good pics and none of the neanderthal engineering I did.

As usual this project is functional, not finished . . .

I finally got the opportunity to try this installation out.

I was trying to pull some chokecherry stumps to expand my back yard.
I pulled with the straight line, drug the truck across the yard.
I double lined with a snatch block, drug the truck across the yard.
Then I double lined with the snatch block while standing on the brakes . .
blew a brake line. Didn't pull the stumps.

I inspected it all and there was no flexing of the mount plate, x-transfer skid, no bending of bolts, it's all bolted.
So the only failure was the weakest link of the left front brake line.

I don't plan on winching my truck up a tree so I think that it will stand up to whatever I put on it.
