Noticed I have a broken leaf on the drivers side. So I'm going to buy 2 new sets. For both sides. Problem is I've run across needing a leaf spring code, which I do not have. There is no door tag and I have tried calling my local dealership and giving them my VIN, they can't look up any codes older than 2000, but they should be the same if not similar, right?

Should I just go to a junkyard and find ones out of the same year truck?

Ideas? Suggestions? Solutions?

Well, if you wanted to do it the best way possible, toss in some Chevy springs.

If not, grab used ones from a ranger out of a yard, or Craigslist.

I would suggest find a truck that is identical to yours that still has it's door sticker (same body/cab type, same engine/drive-type, same bed size) and then use it's code to order for yours.

Keep in mine there were two payload (GVWR) packages offered so you could still find two different codes listed for a particular truck, so also check to see that it's springs are the same as yours (same # of leaves and their thickness).

As for Chevy springs, they are much longer than Ranger springs (requiring you relocate the spring hangers on your frame). This provides far more suspension flex and durability on a rig that is used for serious offroad work. If this is for the rig in your avatar, I'd definitely lean toward something other than stock replacement leafs (assuming you have more than the stock 2" blocks under them), whether it be the Chevy leafs, or a set of lift leafs (that uses the stock block, or eliminating it altogether).

I have Chevy leafs under my BII. It's primary use is 4-wheeling and/or camping. No doubt this is one of the better suspension mods you can do on a built rig (short of swapping to a linked suspension or something along those lines).
Lots of info about the Chevy spring swap in the Extreme Suspensions forum section, as well as in the Tech Library.

Thank you very much. The truck is my DD however I have been looking into getting a little car as my DD instead, and setting my truck to the side to do some serious work to it. So the Chevy spring idea is a good one.

Not to sound like a stupid question, can a ranger 2wd leafs work on a 4wd? I drive a '89 4wd regular cab.
Thank You.

Yes, all ranger leafs are interchangeable, even Bronco II and explorer leafs will work, with the explorer leafs the center bolt is backward, and they will give a ranger about 2" lift in the back. The only difference between 4x2 and 4x4 Rangers in the rear suspension is the 2" lift block.

Ok. Thank you. Are there any difference between Rangers from 83-90 in terms of the rear leaf springs?

Like they said, there are a few different hauling ratings on these things, but other than that there's no difference between any of the years as far as measurements or interchangeability.
