I have a 1995 ranger. when i start, and run for a while it it will be fine, but if i turn it off then turn it back on in a few minutes it starts but revs down very fast and the engine sounds like its coughing and vibrates alot.

also the check gause light comes on. it might stay on the whole time, might not come on, orit will fly back and fourth.

Sounds like a lot of dirty sensors to me.

Take out your MAF & clean it with carb or brake cleaner.
Take off your IAC valve on your throttle body and clean the carbon deposits out of that, too.
Replace your fuel filter with a new one for $5. It is located on the frame rail under the drivers seat.
Run new gas in it.

Try this, let us know how it goes. If it still has trouble, it could anything from an alternator to fuel delivery to oxygen sensors, man.

My credo
Love Thy Neighbor
I would agree with the sensors being in need of cleaning and you've probably got some codes that can help direct you towards the right one...

I had a problem with my Tempo and took it to a mechanic...the first code was the winner...replaced the MAP sensor and it cleared everything up...so get that engine scanned and go from there...it can save you quite a bit of time and money...

Oh, and most sensors can be obtained at a junkyard...much cheaper than buying new...unless, of course, you are my rich uncle that I've never met...lol
