I just put an 87 bronco 5.0l in my ranger and it idles really high,(at least 2000 or higher), I have replaced, IAC,CTS,O2 and im sort of at a stand still i'm thinking a ground but everything seems to be grounded , and adjusting the dist. doesn't help. any idea would be helpful

is there any smoke out of the exhaust, is the engine getting hot quickly? did the engine run ok before? sounds like you have the wrong IAC valve, or it's incorrectly positioned.

Is the throttle body actually closing?

You can unplug the IAC. You should do this to set the idle anyway (base idle reset)

If it idles high with IAC unplugged, throttle blade closed, then it may be a timing adjustment.

Have you checked the codes?

It runs like you are at 3/4 throttle ... when you pull the wire off IAC it lowers a little ... I haven't put coolant in it yet, originally only tried to start to see if it runs but due to high idle and no coolant I have only started it and then shut it down... i have the coolant lines on as of today and plan to put coolant in it this weekend so I might run it longer. I have read that the IAC might need to go through a LEARN process. I also need to put the thermactor tubes (air tubes that are mounted to the back of the heads) on. don't think they have much to do with idle. the timing when you try to adjust it wants to idle even higher so I don't think that's a problem. I don't know or have much history on this motor so I don't know how it ran before.and I don't have a way to check codes. the engine is out of an 1987 Bronco and the IAC is for a 1987 Bronco so I think that its the right IAC.

You can check codes on OBDI systems without a scanner, Google it.

Have you reset the computer every time you change or clean a sensor disconnect the battery for 1/2 an hour and then run it for about 20 minutes to reset the values. If you are gonna check the codes erase the memory first by running the KOEO test and when it starts giving you codes discontinue the test. Turn the ignition off then disconnect the battery for 1/2 an hour. Run it for 20 minutes then you can pull the codes. Confirm the timing is correct before you do anything disconnect the spout time it lock it down and double check it. clear the memory reset the computer then run the codes.

You also need to fill the cooling system. You are sending the computer false signals by not having coolant on the ECT so it can't tell if it's hot or cold it will idle high.

If you put coolant in it then it takes that variable out of the equazion. The ECT sensor does more than just control the idle speed it adjust the timing and injector pulse width. Do not run it any amount of time without coolant the heads get alot hotter than the manifold real fast. The water pump seal can burn up also get the cooling system in order then continue on with the diagnostic.
