Seriously considering picking up another Ranger. This one is out of my area of expertise, though.

Anything to pick apart other than looking for Ranger rust? If I can work the price down a bit, I'll be driving it home.

Not so sure about the OHC engines, either. Stuff to watch for?

Thanks gents.

It looks clean but $9k seems like a lot for a 119,000 mile, 12 year old truck. I never liked the 4.0 SOHC because it's a typical overcomplicated German engine but I bought 2 new SOHC Rangers because a 3.0 won't go up a hill, all the timing chain cassette problems were cured well before 08.

That's a funny looking shifter for an automatic.

I didn't notice that it said automatic, it mentions a new clutch in a couple places. I'm kind of surprised to see a tow package with a stick, they must have assumed that a Ranger buyer could drive.

Goal was to get them down to 8500-8750. Don't know if I will, though.

Really want this thing as a salt weather truck. Fuel savings alone would make the F350 obsolete.

If it doesn't look abused or coming unglued I would make that offer...

I like mine... and although I've never owned a 4.0L sohc with a stick... you will like the power curve they make. I've probably only had mine over 3k rpms a handful of times in the 4 years I've owned it. It pulls good low end.

The "Tow package" was standard equipment in 08-11. They all got a class IV hitch and a four pin flat connector.

I know this because I yelled at the dealer when I bought my 09 for trying to charge me for the tow package as a seperate option. I made him pull up the specs and see that ALL rangers from 08 on came with a hitch and harness.

Figured the 8500-8750 range was a good deal.

What's the lifespan on the SOHC, and average total miles before its dumb timing chain needs to be replaced?

Pre 02, about 50 miles...

Post 02, till it starts clanking... I've seen them with over 200k on the original chains. :dunno:
Keep the oil clean religiously and there shouldn't be an issue. If you hear the slightest noise when you start it, walk away.

I've never owned one long enough to find out. G8or had one north of 250K before he rebuilt it. gw33p has one north of the same number I believe.

All about the maintenance I'm sure. That year should have all the updates to the tensioners.

Awesome info. This newer stuff is a little out of my knowledge base; I'm good up until 1996 or so, after that? Forget it.
