Mystery engine shut down

I've got an 85 Ranger 2.8 5 spd 4x4...all stock. Problem I'm having is while driving down the road city or highway it will surge dramatically then clean up at cruise. Lately it has been shutting down but will re start with no problem. I have checked/replaced plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, coil, and ignition module and all are in good working order.

After reading some previous threads I'm leaning towards maybe a bad ground. Any other insight some you Ranger land guru's may have please pass it on.

I had a new igition moduel do the same thing to me, but mine is a duraspark setup though. Did you replace the fuel filter at some point?

It doesn't sound like the TFI = they usually just die suddenly.

If it is all stock, pull the codes and post for possible help. It sounds like a control (computer) type of problem.

I don't think its the module as it is a month old. I can see fuel filter and I do know I have some egr issues but would that cause it to die intermittently? All my codes are egr related. Insufficient flow etc.

Ya the egr will cause the engine to die. If the engines vaccum is pulled on the egr, it will make it die immediatly.

And the TFI module can give warning signs to going out. My dads old truck did just that to him and 2 days later, it went out. Buit most of the time, they just go out.

The egr bleed hose that goes to the top of the carb may be clogged it is the one that goes to the solenoid closest to the firewall. if that gets plugged it will hold the egr open. It has the large fitting that pulls filtered air into the egr to close it.
