Could someone tell me what would cause a problem that would bring up a "misfire detector disabled" when I hook up my OBDII diagnostic computer?

What and where is the misfire detector? Is it part of the coil pack? Is it a sensor? or a plug problem? Any help (other than it detects misfires) is appreciated.

This is on a 1999 XLT Ranger 4.0L OHV engine, M5D Trans. Engine placed in the truck on 6-21-08 from the junk yard. Intake, exhaust and coil pack from original engine.

I just finished a 120 mile trip at interstate speeds, the CEL came on after 15 minutes of in town driving.

The camshaft position sensor is what the PCM uses to detect misfires. It is on top of a synchronizer shaft in the back of the engine, where you would expect a distributer to be.

Any Idea how to fix or repair it?

The sensor usually has to be replaced, or there is a connector/wiring problem to the camshaft position sensor.

The sensor you described is one thing that made it from the original engine to this replacement. Could it have been mistimed when I transferred it? or is it simply a hall effect sensor?

This problem would cause stumbling of the engine, wouldn't it?
