I have a 89 ranger with 2.9 and mazda trans. I replaced the transmission about 10,000 miles ago, and just recently it started popping out of third gear on deceleration. It also feels like it doesn't go all the way into third gear (at least compared to how deep it shifts into all the other gears.) Any idea what caused this? Is there anything I can do to remedy this or should I just start pulling the transmission out?

any help would be much appreciated.
thanks.

sounds like there is a high likelyhood of a bearing issue. Seems a little early to be having that.

I have some experience rebuilding manual transmissions. and it definitely feels like the the shift collar isn't making it over the top of the spring loaded detents. even with the engine off, you gant get it to feel like it has gone all the way into third gear, at least without it bouncing right back. so something is probably not sitting in the right place.

I started pulling things apart last night. when I drained the fluid it was a nice charcoal metalic color. not good considering it used to be red. more to come.

I have the trans out and pulled the top cover off, and the 3rd and 4th shift fork was extremely worn on the third gear side. I have heard of that happening on the 4th gear side if you rest your hand on the shifter too much, but Its kind of akward to do that in third, plus the way my truck is geared, It doesn't spend all that much time in third. doesn't make sense to me.

The transmission has only been in your truck a short time. You don't know the previous life of it and also keep in mind this is not a new transmission. It's good that you have identified the cause at least.

Maybe when they went back together with it on the remanufacture they had something a little out of place/alignment?

I replaced the 3/4 shift fork, comparing the new and old one I was surprised how much of the fork had been ground away. more than I had originally thought. I polished up some roughness on the 3rd gear side of the shift collar, and reassebled the rest of the trans. with everything in place 3rd gear seems to have som drag on it that it doesn't have when the forks are not in place. I'm curious if this is the way it is supposed to feel with a new fork, or if this means I am going to ruin another fork.

thats a good question. I have no idea which direction It's supposed to go on, but I can measure each side of it and see if it asymmetrical.
