Lifter noise

Hey everybody my 1985 ranger v6 2.8 litre is making really loud annoying lifter sounds. What's the best additive to help quiet them ty

Barr's used to make a product called "Lifter Quiet" that was good but I haven't seen any in quite a few years.

Would it be better to fix the lifters instead of hiding the noise? How noisy are they? Some engines do have a normal but of lifter noise. But if its getting loud, that’s a sign that a problem is brewing.

I would really like to do a valve jib but have never done one. It's really really loud. So until I can swap the motor or get qet a valve jib done I would like to quiet them tempory w seafoian or ? Udk

Most engines have hydraulic lifters that self adjust. If they get dirty and sticky or clogged, then they do not adjust properly anymore and make ticking noises. The common fix is to put a high detergent additive in the engine to loosen them and unclog them so they start working again. That is what you are talking about. But;

Your engine has solid lifters. They do not self adjust. The parts in the system do wear, and there can be too much clearance in some of the parts, making them noisy. The best way to check and possibly fix the noise is to pull the valve covers and check the clearance with feeler guages, while looking things over for something out of the ordinary. I believe it's 0.16 for the exhaust valves, and 0.14 for the intake valves cold.

From what Ive learned from my 2.8 is that they tend to have noisy lifters. No matter how much adjusting you do to them. Its just wear and tear. Mine sound like a 1,000 cats running around with tap dancing shoes on.
