I ditched the fuel tank, but keeping it was tempting.

I do have a Bronco II tank in my Ranger, which gives me 23 gallons instead of the standard 16

I like that BlackBII, it's what I have in mind with a topper/ cap, I really like to find a long bed to use but around here they're as rare as hens teeth...

Super late in responding on this thread, but as of right now I am using the frame from the truck and I am going to leave the axle under it till I can get around to throwing a trailer axle under it with electric brakes.... I also like the hand brake idea too if only it would work with electric brakes.
Gotta touch up a few welds but overall she is a work in progress. Gonna add a tool box to the front and some tie downs too.

I have a truck bed trailer made out of 3/4 of a 93 long bed frame, frame was cut right ahead of the radius arm mounts and bent together and an A frame coupler welded on. Pulled the 8.8 apart, removed the brakes entirely, pulled the ring gear off and reassembled everything. Even though the pinion spins easily, the amount of drag is quite significant at speed. Just cut the tail light wiring off at the firewall and wired a 7 pin onto it after I stripped out all the wiring I didn't need (has reverse lights because why not?). Trailer weighs 870 pounds stripped right down to nothing (bed, frame, lights). I put a bumper, tailgate, bedliner, and wood sides on it, so it probably weighs a bit over 1k now. I've got 245/75r16 tires on it and the spare lives on the tongue, it has about 60 pounds of tongue weight like this.

I've put 2 plus face cords of hardwood in it on a few occasions and it tows alright, sway can definately be an issue but it is usually manageable. This was a quick and dirty build, I'm into it for the coupler and about 30 bucks of miscellaneous hardware and gear oil, I think it cost me more to register it the first time.

They make electric brakes with provisions for a parking brake, might be worth looking into.
