So I turned my engine to tdc and wired the firing order correct and it starts and runs. And then when I put it in reverse and let the clutch out very slowly and it stalls and try to start it again. And it does not turn over. What could be the problem?

My truck is a 1988 ford ranger xlt 2.9L V6 all stock but old

I think it's a fuel problem. Like dirty injecters. So I'm going to get 5 gallons of shell V power gas and some sea foam and see what it does.

But my egr valve turns on every time I turn on the key and it's loud. But I think that's the fuel pump pumping to it.

The battey cable are fine. My timing is correct. But I don't know why it does not start again

bad clutch safety switch?

Next time you have the issue, have some one jump the starter solenoid while you hold down the clutch and brakes.

The EGR valve is vacuum operated and should not make any noise. How have you determines that this noise is in fact the EGR valve.

Also, any EGR at idle will kill a gas engine right away. It won't wait until you let the clutch out.

Finally, an 88 2.9L doesn't have EGR.

That is an EGR valve.

That leaves us with one of three possibilities.

1) Your truck is not an 88

2) Your truck is not as unmolested as you think

And I don't think this to be highly likely

3) You are mistaken about the engine you have.

Pics of the engine bay would be nice. I would particularly like to see close ups of the white sticker on the radiator support and the area back around the battery.

Ok but now I bypass the clutch and when I start it, I have to hold the gas down to turn over. And when it was running the headers were smoking alot I think of all the old oil or do I need to punt more oil in the engine cause I put 2 new quarts in

Do you mean you have to give it some gas for it to start or hold the pedal all the way to the floor?
The manifolds will smoke a little for a while if you've gotten oil/grease on them while working on the engine. It'll burn off.
The last question...check the oil level on the dipstick. The 2.9 holds 5qts if I'm remembering correctly.

The gas is pedel to the metal. My truck is on a hill and the dip stick is past the max. So the headers smoke but when I turn off the engine, smoke comes out of the throttle body very light and slowly and when I open the oil cap some white smoke comes out also.

So my friend from napa auto parts told me it the fuel filter because even tho I by passed the safety clutch switch, I still need to hold the clutch and gas and it wants to start but it dies out when I let go of the key. I think I'm getting spark. I just need to change the fuel filter and the oil cause it has be stilling for 3 years

take your intake house off from the air filter box and the throttle body, spray a little starting fluid into the throttle body and see if it starts right up. if so, then you have a fuel issue. if not, then you need to start another diagnosis.

I changed the fuel filter and there is a lot of fuel pressure now. But I think it's a timing issue.
