I got 170,000 miles on my 2000 Ranger before the crankcase milkshake. Both heads cracked and I decided to rebuild the whole motor. All the bearings looked new, and the cylinder walls still had the original hone marks. Also, the cylinders had no ridge at the top. An unnecessary rebuild but I didn't want to have to tear it all down again for a very long time.

Looking at a 97 4.0L 4x4 5spd with 140k miles. curious about how hard/easy it is to replace the u-joint, u-joints?
I found a 94 4x4 5spd, not sure if 3.0 or 4.0L motor, or mileage, but it would be $1300 but it needs a u joint, and has an exhaust leak. undriveable without a u joint?

I have 353,432 on my retired 92 4.0. It has the typical lifter tick but ran like a champ until I parked it and stole the front-end out from under it for the Explorer. The explorer had 136,XXX with no lifter tick and runs great. I also have a 88 Ranger with a 91 4.0 in it with 116,XXX. Do the regular maintenance and up keep and it will last for a while.

Depends where it is and how bad. Ihave 183k on my 4.0 and got the lifter tick , and some very minor vacuum leak some where. It'll go all day long an love every second of it.

It's extremely rare for a 4.0 to have a lifter tick.
The common tick is worn push rods and rocker arms.

It's alot easier to fix than most people think. The heads stay on, only the valve covers and rocker shafts have to be removed. (and the upper intake, for access)

It is alot easier to say I have the common lifter tick than I have the worn out pushrod and rocker arm tick. Geez :D

My 92 ranger has 262,000 as of today. I bought it last dec at 250k. It runs perfectly other then not having the best fuel economy, minor tick at idle. sounds like the injectors.

I fully intend to get at least another 100,000 on it.

The 93 4.0 I bought a few weeks ago has got 227k miles on it and runs like a champ! No leaks or noises at all. I think I need a new slave cylinder, but besides that, it runs awesome.

My 2000 has 280K, runs perfectly fine. Last check it was getting 19 MPG mixed driving. I just put a new lower intake gasket in, the engine looked squeaky clean inside. My girl insists on 3k oil changes..... I saw for myself how right she was. LOL.

It seems to be a well made easy to repair engine.
