Here is a bunch of junk I have collected over the past few years. It's not complete but probably the most complete listing for stuff that will work for a Ranger V8 swap.
Auto Transmissions
C4
3 speed auto 64-86, still pretty easy to find, light weight, compact and durable. Best to use a 1970 and newer due to revisions such as a larger input shaft and pump. Can be found in many cars and trucks (too many to list)
C5
3 speed auto 82-86 ,getting harder to find, same diminsions as a C4 only difference is a lock up torque converter. They were installed in 83-85 Rangers and some BIIs. This means if you find a RBV C5 you can use the stock t-case by switching to a C4 valve body, bellhousing and torque converter
C6
3 speed auto 66-96, strongest Ford automatic. Much larger but be sure to find the small block bolt pattern due to integral bellhousing. Can be found in may cars and trucks.
AOD
4 speed auto 80-91. Highly suggested to use 88 and newer due to improvements. Can easily be found in most cars and trucks.
AODE
4 speed auto. It's an electronically controlled AOD, found in OBDII vehicles, starting in 95. You will have to watch here. Some cars have the 4.6L which does not have a small block bolt pattern. With the correct bolt pattern this transmission will likely be already bolted to a 5.0L
E4OD 4 speed, replaced the C6 89-98. Found in F-series and E-series.
All of these are 4x2 and 4x4 versions
Manual Transmissions
New Process 435
heavy-duty 4-speed transmission with cast iron case and extension housing and aluminum shift tower. 1964-85 Ford pickup trucks and stripped chassis, produced in both 4x2 and 4x4 drive versions.
Borg Warner T18
heavy-duty 4-speed transmission with cast iron case and shift cover. Available in4x 2 and 4x4 drive versions. Used in Ford trucks 1956-73
Borg Warner T19
heavy-duty 4-speed transmission with cast iron case and shift cover. Case casting number is 1309. Easily confused with T18, but the T19 is synchronized in all forward speeds. Available in 4x2 and 4x4 models. Used in Ford trucks 1974-85.
Borg Warner T5
All aluminum 5 speed top loading transmission. All forward gears synchronized. Early design has brass synchronizer rings while later "world class design" uses paper lined rings and tapered bearings on countershaft. Usually found in mustangs but can be converted to 4x4 with chevy T5 parts.
M5R2
Mazda built 5 speed fully synchronized transmission found in 1988 to present Ford F150 series trucks and full size Broncos. Aluminum case, extension housing, and shift cover, with integral bell housing. Available in 4x2 and 4x4 versions. 1995 and later models have top cover reverse light switch moved to forward corner of shift cover. In 1996 case is changed to accommodate modular motor (4.6L), with starter bolt pattern being triangular. In 1999 the case was changed for 4.2L 4x4 drive vehicles. The case is very similar to earlier style units with case length shorter on 4.6L and 4.2L models.
ZF S542 and S547
The S 542 Heavy duty 5 speed fully synchronized transmission with aluminum case and extension housing. The bell housing is integral to the case. Shifter is mounted to small shift cover on top of unit. Built in 4x2 and 4x4 versions. This unit is used in Ford F250, F30, F450, and Super duty trucks from 1987-94. The Super duty model has a mechanical park brake assembly mounted to the extension housing. The S542 is found behind 300, 302, 351, 460, and diesel power plants. The S547 unit is used behind the same engines from 1995 to present. Both units have PTO covers on each side of case. On the left side of the case is mounted and ID tag, which gives the Ford Part number, the ZF part number and the unit serial number.

Transfer Cases
Yes it is possible to use your stock t-case, here's your options
Use a C5 4x4 transmission, use a C4 bellhousing, torque converter and valve body
Or use an adapter from Advance Adapter to adapt it to whatever you use (stupid and expensive in my opinion)
If you use a transmission from a fullsize you have a few pretty easy and for the most part inexpensive choices. All the fullsize t-cases use the same pattern, its whether it will fit or not
NP203
two speed, gear reduction-chain driven, it will fit but not a good choice unless using it for parts for a doubler due to weight and being a full time 4wd unit. 1:1 high and a 1.96:1 low. Fords are typically 32 spline outputs and a 31 spline input Various kit on the market to create the 203/205 doubler

NP205
two speed geardriven. Will fit with no major mods, Requires a bracket for support due to it's weight of 160lbs. Very heavy and heavy duty. Poor low range like the 203, 1.96:1 but a few doubler kits it on the market. You use an NP203 reduction box with an adapter to mate that to your NP 205. The NP205 can be twin-sticked as well either with aftermarket shift rails or grind them your self. (see link) Found in 73-79 F100/250s. Only offered as a married case on the 100’s but then offered as a married case on the 250 in 77.

NP208
two speed, chain drive, aluminum case. Pretty light weight and stout. A little on the large side but will fit with a few modifications. Cut a few tabs off the t-case and if more room is needed shave 1/8in from the lower part of the frame, found in 80-86 F-series and Bronco.
BW1345
two speed, chain drive, magnesium case. 2.69:1 low, found in 80-87 F-series and Bronco. On the large side but with work it can fit if needed to. For all the work it's better to select a different unit.
BW1356
two speed, chain drive, magnesium case. 2.69:1 low, found in 87-96 F-series and Bronco. On the large side but with work it can fit if needed to. For all the work it's better to select a different unit.
Dana 20
two speed, gear driven, iron case. 2.46:1 low, found only in 66-77 bronco behind C4 or 3speed manual. Caution! This case requires early bronco specific output shaft, housing and spud shaft.
Dana 21
single speed, gear driven 1:1 ratio. All it does it engage and disengage the front driveshaft. 62-72 ½ ton 4x4s 4-spds (usually an NP435).
Divorced t-cases:
Not as common any more but they will work as well. A separate t-case crossmember is required as well as a 2wd transmission. Good to use as a cheap doubler as well.
NP205
Same as married 205 just divorce mounted.
Dana 24
two speed, cast iron, gear driven, 1.86:1 low. Found in 59-72 F250-F350s 4x4s and were also common in the 59-66 F100s.
