Posted this here seeing as it relates to the servicing of the truck....

this is also found in the computer section

Have a question.

does anyone know how to alter the default ini file within the *pubs/programs* folder to change the program interface to NOT look for the cd rom as the location for the manual information but rather to a selected folder that I have transferred all of the information from the cd to?

When one installs the service manual the program will install the PUBS folder to anywhere you decide to put it. The manuals program (I believe it is within *view16.exe*) defaults to looking for the manual on the cd disc (there is an entry in the ini file that states....*=REMOVEABLE,*,any CD-ROM Drive....). I want to just change that to look for the info in the folder on the hard drive where I have copied everything to so I no longer have keep using the disc.

My attempts at re-writing the ini keep failing.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
You should be able to replace that line with the actual path to the manual on your computer.

Or, add 2 forward slashes at the beginning of that line to make it ignore the line searching for a cdrom.

It would be easier if we could see the text of the initial file.

Keep an original copy of the ini file with a different name so you can easily go back to it if necessary. I usually just make the extension ".xini"

Not a problem, here's the ini file.....

[dlls]

if I alter that line for the directory to the cdrom..... the program will return an error when you open the techincal service publication program, select the vehicle you want to view, then press the tab button for *view selected group*.

other option would be to use a virtual cd rom drive with an iso image of the cd loaded on to the virtual cd rom drive.

daemon tools works for mounting ISO disc images
http://www.disk-tools.com/download/daemon

make ISO using any cd burning software
if you don't have the proper software cd burner xp works very well and is free you can get it here
link will start download immediately FYI
https://download.cdburnerxp.se/cdbxp_setup_4.5.7.6389.exe

I've used these for a long time and they are virus free both downloads are links from the sites not a shady third party site...

i believe that the service cd will only run on windows xp or 98 so either load on older computer or create a virtual machine on your current computer
here is a free software to make a virtual machine
https://www.virtualbox.org/

just be aware you will need a legal copy of the windows OS you choose to run and some extra hard drive space like 10 to 20 Gb for windows xp..

hope this helps

I have both 7 & XP SP3 alongside each other, the service manual does run in 7,

I was hoping that a method of pointing to the folder where I have all of the information that is on the cd would work.

I did try to point to the PUBS folder\manual (manual being where I have installed all the folders that are on the cd) in hopes that this would work. The manual interface cannot seem to find all of the individual directories that it finds on the cd. I'm assuming that this has something to do with the *view16.exe* which is located in the PUBS\PROGRAMS folder which is the command exe for the manual. *info1.ini* is located in that same folder which the exe uses to find the manual information on the cd but can't find the folder that I placed everything into.

I forgot about making an ISO. I used to do that more when I was using Linux. I'm out of practice. Sorry.
